Last one out this morning. Five healthy chicks hatched out of six incubated eggs with two assists. Very tired Cayuga baby and my nerves are absolutely SHOT. This may be my first and only incubation for a loooong time.
Thank you again for your help!
Ok!
It is 72 hours since internal the pip, 48 hours after the safety pip with the chick still alive, peeping, moving, but no external pip of their own. I have opened the air cell and the membrane is quite dry. Using coconut oil and a tweezers, I worked the part of the membrane that no longer...
While I wait, I was wondering, do you know if making an external safety pip in the egg can actually interfere with the duckling making an external pip as well?
I read it mentioned somewhere that doing this may inhibit the natural response of the duckling to externally pip since CO2 level never...
This sets my mind at ease! Thank you!
I just candled the egg again (24 hours post pinhole) and the duckling is still yawning a lot so it's definitely busy absorbing.
I'll definitely leave the pinhole alone and check again in another 12 hours (the 36 hour mark) to see how the little one is doing.
Hello!
How long after artificially externally pipping a duck egg is it safe to wait until investigating a little further. It has been 24 hours and I am planning to wait 36 to see if the duckling is able to externally pip on its own. Upon candling I can see they internally pipped and over the...
Ok, after massaging her abdomen it does not seem like she is egg egg bound but I gave her 1 ml of calcium gluconate just in case.
It is very good to know that being egg bound can impinge surrounding nerves causing lameness.
No drakes (yet) but the ladies do enjoy having sapphic affairs with each other from time to time.
Just gave the calcium gluconate and going to give meloxicam in a little. Also long soaks in the warm bath in the AM and PM for now.
Thank you!
I will definitely feel her abdomen and check to see if there is an egg. She is pooping but not a lot because I do not think she has eaten today or yesterday evening. Maybe a partial obstruction?
But you're right, definitely a good idea to rule out.
It is a bit hard to tell which ducks lay...
Hello!
Yesterday I noticed our welsh harlequin duck Ravioli was limping and hesitant to come into the pen from the pond for bedtime. They could still stand at that point but on one leg, hesitant to put pressure on their left leg.
We inspected their leg and foot last night for bumbles, heat...
