That’s good to know. This austrolorp (Rosa) def is acting like a boss. It’s interesting bc so unexpected. She also could be traumatized by the attack and in super offensive mode. I’m hoping time heals all - will update this post after the weekend
A friend who had two chickens lost one to a raccoon attack, leaving her 6 yr old austrolorp with PTSD. She was afraid and not happy so I agreed to adopt her. I assumed she’d get bullied by my flock of 8, but committed to giving adoption a shot. To my surprise, she’s been extremely aggressive...
Thanks all, some good points to consider. If I were to try this I’d probably have to move them btw 2-4 times a year- likely pack the six of them into a dog crate and drive 6 hours- may not be feasible…My husband has wanted to do this for years, I just don’t like the idea of rehoming my girls. I...
I’m thinking of getting a second residence in another state. Has anyone tried moving their small flock to another place periodically? I know chickens don’t like change, would they be able to adjust if they split their time between two coups in different places? I have six in my flock.
I only have the six, they are all 9 months now. 4 are laying and believe it or not - my black austrolorp just started squatting this week. Looks like she’ll lay soon, which would leave my speckled Sussex the only one not laying. Her comb isn’t red yet either, she may delay until spring?
Update, my barnevelder layed her first egg at 7-1/2 months. Specked Sussex and black austrolorp, same age- none yet. Columbian Wyandotte who’s also same age laying but hers are still rather small. Two barnyard mix Easter Eggers ( same age) are still laying huge eggs almost daily😜
I got 4 chicks hatched March 16, only one is laying -71/2 months old! Each different heritage breeds. I also have two barnyard mix pullets same age, that have been laying huge beautiful eggs for months.
I have 4 pullets, 29 weeks- and only one, columbian Wyandotte is laying. Her eggs are very small, been about two months and all very small. The others, none. I feed them purina organic layer, protein snacks.
Update: my 29 week old austrolorp, barnevelder, and speckled Sussex still not laying. So I’m thinking Lady of McCamley may be right. Perhaps something caused their delay, and now not enough light hours to trigger onset. My columbian Wyandotte is laying a few small eggs per week… I started...
A related question, will my delayed pullets grow their full combs and wattles in the spring at the same time their laying hormones kick in? They will be one year old mid March 2023. Or should I expect them to physically mature and fill out this Fall and Winter?
Wow that’s very interesting, and makes sense. I’m fine about when they lay, now or spring. If that’s the case then it’s good news. I owe you, you saved me months of wondering what’s up!
I have four 7 month old pullets, only one is laying small eggs. The other three seem undeveloped, not full size, small combs etc. speckled Sussex, barnevelder, austrolorp. My columbian Wyandotte laying for about 3 weeks, very small eggs. I also have two barnyard mix I adopted at 12 weeks, they...
