Ok so I usually incubate my own chicks but 2 weeks ago I went to tractor supply and bought about 150 chicks,.. As a brooder I use totes and heat lamps until they are feathered and then I let them be without the lamp until I feel they are big enough to survive outside.. which I have had very good...
for brooders i just use the plastic totes and and the 8 dollar lamp from tractor supply and the red heating bulbs.. I have raised lots of chicks that way and never had a problem
my first hatch I had 6 chicks. I cleaned out the bedding once every 3 days and they didn't smell... But the more you have the faster it smells.. now that I'm better at hatching I slip them up into different brooders. Helps a lot! just whenever you notice that smell... clean it out :)
I leave my heat lamps on 24/7 for about 2 weeks... or until feathered then i shut them off... However i keep my babies in my house so they don't ever get cold but if you have them in a barn i would reccomend leaving it on for much longer. Then you would want them to have some size to them
i have chicks of different ages and I can relate to a lot of the posts... they love you for the first week then run away for the next 6 lol. I find that when they get older they tend to be more accepting of me and actually run up to see what I have for them. It really does make you feel bad...
