Thank you! I was thinking the same thing, and have always wanted an option for a partition anyways, for introducing new chicks. My husband said, "seems like an awful lot of rigmarole for one broody hen." But I like it, and I'm hoping it will work out.
Well, I was not successful moving my broody hen to a private area. Thankfully, my dad is supportive in enabling my chicken habit, so he installed a partition. The rest of the hens are ****** off at not being able to access their laying area. Mind you, they do have access to actual nest boxes. My...
Thanks! Yeah, I just wondered if a 24 hour possible gap between some of the eggs would result in too-staggered of a hatch. Yes I've got quite a mix (this is an old list and I also have Spitz and Spitz/Merlerault mixes now too) and I'm hoping to hatch the white, green and dark brown eggs. For...
Hi everyone! I've been reading up on this process as I seem to have a broody hen. I am planning to move her to a private area tonight. What I'm wondering is, since I don't have fancy hatching eggs or anything I'm planning to use with her, can I just move her current eggs that she is sitting on...
This is an old post, I know, but I'm trying to figure out if CL roo X Silver Spangled Spitz would result in sexable chicks. Or CL roo X black or splash Spitz (prob not?)
Does anyone know?
I have 9 chicks who are now 6 weeks old and I believe they are all pullets but their coloring isn't quite what I expected for females. We had four from this same hatch who were very obviously cockerels, with larger, pinker combs. These chicks pictured are Rhodebar or Welsummer x Cream Legbar...
Yes, that's what I've read anyways. The Sapphire cross is generally a leghorn x CCL, which lays a pretty blue. I don't have any of these yet. The eggs from our one white layer, a Blue Andalusian, unfortunately did not hatch - there were four of them - two early quitters and two that fully...
Okay, good to know! I'd love some white layers to mix with my CL roo, and the hairdo's are just so cute! I'll let you know, I'm still trying to figure out for sure if I can make the trip.
So cute! I've read these don't do well in confinement. Mine have a generous run and get out in the evenings for about two hours, would such an arrangement be suitable for this breed?
Ahh, yes, you have a point. We'll see how many pullets I actually have, it's looking like a 50/50 split. I have Rhodebar, Welsummer, and Dominique covered by Cream Legbar roo, with the possiblity of Rhodebar roo (especially in the Dominique). So I'm hoping for some greenish and olive egg layers...
Is there a current list of what will be available at chickenstock? I've been searching through the pages cuz I thought someone posted an updated list recently and alas, I haven't been successful yet.
I hatched out 16 chicks this week, so theoretically I shouldn't need any more this summer, but....
Hatch update @Chaos18 -
We have hatched 15 so far and just moved them to brooder! It is day 21, there are 4 more eggs in the bator that may or may not hatch. At day 18 these eggs looked lively, especially two of them.
So we have
2 Welsummer x CL roo
4 Dominique x CL roo (or possibly...
Tonight I'll put our eggs in lockdown. I'm excited to take out the blocks that I've been using as makeshift turners, then I won't have to worry anymore about smooshing eggs There is something in the lid of the bator that at a certain angle will bump into any propped up egg - I smashed a second...
