Egg production has disappeared in a young healthy flock, deformed eggs

Thanks for your replies. My chickens do not have obvious (audible) respiratory problems or pus coming from their nostrils, so they are not exhibiting the clearest symptoms of IB. A year or so ago my black australorp hen developed... not quite a water belly, but some kind of rear abdominal...

Egg production has disappeared in a young healthy flock, deformed eggs

Hi all, I was wondering if someone here could help me with a recent, precipitous decline in my flock's egg-laying output. From about the middle til the end of July, my six hens (born 2/2017, and laying from 8/2017 on without a problem, apart from a slight drop off in winter due to lack of...

3 week old chick right eye injury

I noticed today for the first time that my 3 week old Black Copper Marans probable cockerell has some kind of problem with his right eye. There appears to be a fleshy element in the bottom right corner, possibly a damaged nictitating membrane. I asked my chick’s breeder if she had any idea what...

Strange air pocket in candled egg

Since I promised an update by end-of-weekend, here it is: I had 9 hatching eggs - the aforementioned 4 under the broody and another 5 in an indoor bator. I decided on this distrubtion because my broody is a juvenile Ameraucana, only about 8 months old, and I was worried she lacked the mass to...

Strange air pocket in candled egg

Ryan, thanks for your thoughts. I am on board with you to just let nature take its course and see what happens. This is my second incubation (and first under a broody) and I’m sure you know how intense the anticipation with these things can be. Anyway, I checked the eggs a few hours ago and it...

    Hello everyone

Thanks for the welcome. I was kidding - the dogs are perfectly harmless towards people (animals are another matter). Wouldn't own a 100 lb animal that would attack another human!

Strange air pocket in candled egg

Hello SavKel, thanks for your reply. Internal pipping is certainly a possibility, but I had a hard time distinguishing the movement of the embryo from any movement I might have accidentally imparted to the egg while holding it. If not internally pipped, do you think it's a quitter?

    Hello everyone

Longtime lurker, first time user writing to introduce hisself. (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I raised chickens when I was a kid for about 10 years. After a decade of hiatus, I am back at it. (2) How many chickens do you have right now? Two easter eggers, one...

Strange air pocket in candled egg

Hi all, I'm looking for some community input on the candling of an egg. I am letting my broody hen sit on four Marans eggs in a part of an outdoor coop that is separate from the other hens but open to the ambient air. Tonight marked the end of day 18, so I candled the eggs under her. The ambient...
