Australorps originated from the cross breeding of Orpingtons to create a more well-rounded chicken. :)
As such, they have fantastic personalities like the Orpington, however are known for their inquisitive rather than docile nature. They're ultra friendly and would suit families with children...
Not to worry, the first couple of weeks they often lay intermittently! The eggs are typically smaller and sometimes lack pigment or even have a soft shell. Australorp's are great layers, it won't be long until she's laying regularly for you :)
Hi guys, thanks for your feedback! Snowpeeostrich she is ISA brown x Australorp! Thanks for the suggestion, I give her shell grit but I'll find a calcium supplement for her! Not sure how long this will continue for.. lol!
Aart I'm absolutely sure! Her eggs are different than my other layers...
Hi guys!
One of my pullets, Coconut, started laying months after her sisters. She's been laying for only a fortnight or so now and she often lays two eggs a day! One at around 10am and another around 2pm! Just wondering if anyone could give me any information on multiple egg laying? Is there...
Deheltzel & CTKen, thanks very much for your insights! I really appreciate it and have learnt a lot. CTKen those sound like excellent things to keep in mind, I have a false egg here so if someone sets I'll slip that under them before purchasing fertilised eggs. In the meantime I'm on the list...
I've had Calls for a little while now and we just love them! They're so amusing, some of the things they do are absolutely hilarious and have us in stitches! They would happily spend the entire day in the water and they forage a lot also, which can help with cost of feed. Mine love the chickens...
Thanks for your response!
No, i'm more than familiar with the expenses of keeping animals as pets. I have other pets aside from chickens and I'm prepared for the costs of keeping chickens to more than double with the introduction of 3 new and larger chickens. The reason why I would consider...
Hi guys!
Up until last Friday we had a breeding pair of apricot Calls, Billy and Lulu. They're 10 months old and I've seen them mate on numerous occasions.
On Friday, Lulu laid her first egg! Not even an hour later, a dog attacked them. Lulu managed to escape unharmed but Billy was killed...
Thanks for your reply! It makes perfect sense that ISA brown's wouldn't be broody, I didn't even think of that! Actually 2 of them are half Australorp, hopefully that works in my favour! Who knows, I'll definitely give it a go. I might leave their eggs for a few days in their nests and see if...
Hi guys!
I'm relatively new to the poultry game, 10 months ago we started by buying 3 isa brown chicks and 2 call ducklings! I absolutely love having chickens and we're ready to expand our flock! After much research I've decided to go with Orpingtons, I love them and I think they'll suit us...
Our ducklings were quite different at that age! We had our suspicions around their genders early on. Our girl Lulu made a heap of noise and Billy was very quiet. When he eventually started making noise his quack sounded quite raspy, which I've heard before is typical of a male call. Despite...
