Well, the little crock pot full of rocks worked reasonably well.
It kept the temp inside of the coop up about 12-13 degrees higher than it would have otherwise been so that when the temp outside was 19 it was 32 in with Holiday.
Not bad for an eleven dollar purchase from target.
The coop is designed to let air out up near the top (it gets hot in Houston in the Summer) but right now I have those openings covered with a thick plastic tarp. Not sealed tight but enough to stop the wind from blasting into the coop.
I bought a remote read thermometer as well that I'll be...
Well I decided to go with an unconventional approach and bought a 1.5 qt crock pot from Target to use as a kind of space heater for the coop.
The idea is to fill it full of river rocks, set it to "low" and place it behind her nesting box.
If she gets really cold hopefully she will try to sleep...

I totally agree....they're flock animals. Have you considered adopting another bird or two?
Too bad she doesn't have anybody to huddle with. Personally, I would bring her in, but I'm a worrier. In such a small space, if it's not drafty and has lots of dry bedding in it, I'm sure...
Right now I am concerned for Holiday, the chicken that wandered into our yard last year.
This is the first time we have had "cold" weather here in Houston which will be staying below freezing for more than 24 hours and I am concerned for her.
Her coop is 2' wide, 2' deep and 4' high with her...
My girl Holiday has been doing great but today we noticed that she was missing most of her tail feathers.
We thought at first that maybe some neighborhood cat had attacked her but after watching her for a bit I saw her start pulling the last few she still had out herself.
Is this normal...
My bird, Holiday has basically been brooding for two months now.
She doesn't even have an egg to sit on but still spends her entire day in the coop siting in the nesting box.
We aren't really allowed to raise chickens in this subdivision (we wouldn't even have Holiday if she hadn't come to...
Well here is the coop attached to the run..
The smaller wooden box is what I originally built as a coop for her (just a little on the small side, eh?). Since up until now she's been going into the smaller box to lay her eggs, I'm going to leave it in the run for a few days to help her...

Well, right now we are trying to break her of the habit of wanting to roost in a tree at night.
Last night I brought her into the run about 30 minutes before sunset and locked her up to hopefully get her used to the idea. Tonight once the new coop is attached to the run I'll shut her...
Well we had our first "predator scare" the other night.
Holly still prefers to roost on the branch in the tree at sunset and I typically move her over to the run an hour or two later but last Saturday night when I went out to get her something else was in the bushes and scaring the devil out...
