All great advice and remember new chicks after you have some established flock members will get it a lot sooner!
My first flock of chicks were terrible at being chickens also but I hatched a few out and mama hen teaches them what I taught her when she was young !
Just keep in mind that although I have tried to put it off and ignore it my hens love and need to have a dry loose dirt or sandy area to bath in. I let them free range the whole yard about 1 or 2 days a week besides that they stay in their coop and fenced run where I do not have an area for them...
Do you have a roo ? Even so it is the funniest thing watching the mama act when other hens or the roo come around!! She puffs up real big and spreads her wings out and backs away from them while the chicks are behind her she also fights other hens when they come around just exploring they get...
Well I have to be honest if she's been sitting under there and is fine now she will likely be okay another few days. I would put some water and a little food under there for the mama and chicks and after about 3 days or so they will likely emerge to explore and the mama will protect them well. I...
Well it seems to me that they are just all sorts of stressed out is all. You have a lot of newbies that are trying to establish their own pecking order and then a new bunch gets introduced and they have to start all over again and to top it off you have a roo in there who will always place...
Awesome! Congrats! If that's what you wanted.....
I had a broody hen hatch two newbies a month or two ago. It's a great fun experience !!
Just remember they know better than you do on what to do and how so let them do their thing!!
Depends on if you want her to hatch eggs for sure or just want her to stop being broody?.
I have a couple hens same buffs that have gone broody I go out twice a day and pick them up and put them out of the nesting box and remove eggs from them. A few times they get upset and little pecks on my...
Wow a lot of question marks on this one...
If it were me I would likely play it out and see how it goes. My concerns are these...
They may enjoy each other's company to the extent that they begin to merge into one flock as you may see your hens in his coop or them in yours.
You also may see...
I just hatched 2 new birds out over 3 weeks ago from a broody hen be sure and remove her to a different place with water and food otherwise you will have issues as I did. Also I have my doubts that the egg is fertile as its been over a week of laying eggs and no roo to fertilize... Just keep in...
Be very careful to clean up the pen you have them all in if it was with the others so as to not spread anything it had because if it's contagious you will quickly notice that more birds will start dying. I had this happen only bloody stools also and after the first one went I lost two more in...
I had three chicks hatched a few weeks ago we separated the mama and eggs until hatched then after a few days of them being hatched we let mama and babies outside with the other flock and mama kept them safe from the Roos but we are about 2.5 or 3 weeks into it now after moving them to the big...
All very true but I have had my flock of 26 fly over a 6ft tall fence like it was just a little hop up!! I have since constructed a 10ft high fence that they do not try to fly out of (yet!) also keep in mind that yes that much area is enough for that many birds but they will destroy any flower...
7-8 months??... Why can't you just tell by the fact they are laying eggs!! Lol all of mine were laying and always have layed around 5months. And hey free is great when your talking 2 buffs that are just entering their egg producing years!!
They both look like hens. Not all hens have a small waddle and comb. I've got 11 buffs and a couple of them look as though there isn't a waddle or comb there at all!! And some are pretty big but the Roos have very large deep red and pronounced combs and waddles they even get in their way when...
