I thought it was the rooster being aggressive with her but now I think it’s something else. First she lost her feathers on her wing. Now her throat is bare and she has a very scruffy appearance.
What is happening and what do it do? Is it mites? Lice? If so, what do I do with other chickens and...
One of my roosters has a broken beak (broken top beak). He had a very unfortunate situation when he was a day old. He is lucky survived as his egg-mate didn’t.
I had hoped it would grow but apparently it’s not (he’s about 9 months old now).
For most of his life I have provided water through a...
Ok. But I don’t have a lot of poop in my run since I have the roosting shelves. So I’m not sure it will break down. Mayne I’ll try a bag and see what happens. Thx!
I have lots of energy!
So if I don’t wet the pellets, how do they breakdown/soften? I have a roosting shelf so the floor of the coop stays clean. I don’t get much chicken poop on the floor, so there’s no moisture. Do the pellets break down just naturally with hens stepping on them? They are so...
I do. I contemplated it but ended up leaving them in the coop last night. I buttoned it up a bit (not too much). The temp inside started at 27° (15°) outside and slowly decreased through the night.
Currently the coop temp is 1.8° and it’s -11 outside. Ugh.
Yesterday it started from a higher...
I love the chemistry of this! I can’t actually remember where I read about the bioavailability of egg shells for chickens. I’ll see if I can find it. But I hear what you’re saying - egg shells = fast release and Oyster shell = slow release.
Oh also….i have 4 Cochins which are not cold hardy. I found out after I got them. But the worst part. One of them is a frizzle. With feathers like his, he can’t trap in his body heat. So far he’s been fine but i do wonder if he’s extra stressed by our cold. I thought maybe I’d bring him...
It was so awful. I had no idea what I was doing with chickens back then. I had to move them from their coop in the middle of a frigid night because there was a weasel in the coop. He was attached to the underbelly of a hen. I heard them freaking out from my house. I moved them to our barn which...
Yes. Horse pellet. They are very big and hard. I just can’t see it breaking down naturally without added moisture. Am I wrong? I only use these because I can sift through it every few days to get it clean. I use a poop shelf under the roost so the floor never gets messy. I just have to pick up...
Socks? Noooooo. Ha ha!!
I just hate shavings so much. They get so gross and you can’t sift it at all. You just have to remove the lot. With softened pellets you use a sifter to keep it clean. I have a poop shelf that I clean every two days or so. Then replace the poop shelf with clean bedding...
It’s going to be -20 to -40 where I live this weekend. But that’s with windchill. If the chickens are in a coop, that doesn’t count, right?
I know it’s a silly question but I’m worried all the same.
I’ve had a hen lose her feet due to frostbite - 10 years ago and in a different situation…but...
