Choosing a breed(s) for South Georgia

Thanks for the reply! Are the leghorns and Reds best for this climate though? I want to make sure I get a breed that will tolerate and thrive in S. Georgia heat.

What a great idea of having a green roof for insulation. Looks great!

Choosing a breed(s) for South Georgia

Also- is it a good idea to mix breeds, as in maybe 2 of one breed, 2 of another? Also, I would prefer a fairly common breed that isn't hard to find. Thanks!

Choosing a breed(s) for South Georgia

I have read some literature on this site and in several books about the different breeds, but I'd like to hear more about picking a breed! I am building a moveable coop for 3-4 laying hens. I have four small children, two cats, and the possibility of a dog. I don't have a fully fenced yard...

Good Crops to grow and feed in GA

We were planning on having about 12-15 chickens, and just gathering the eggs for ourselves, since we have a growing family. It's just really hard to find good information about chickens here, which is surprising since we are in a rural community. We live in a small town, with just one store...

Good Crops to grow and feed in GA

I was looking up a few grain crops: rye, wheat, barley and oats.... there seem to be varieties that will grow well in this area in winter. I want to make sure their diets are balanced though. We were going to grow broad beans in our winter garden, so perhaps more of those to add some protein...

    Deep Litter plans

I was going to update this, because I still am confused about the best flooring to use. Should it be linoleum or dirt, raised or not? Any more ideas or imput on this?

Thanks for the information! I still don't think I could kill the things though I suppose I'll feel differently if they start attacking my hens though!

I didn't know it was illegal to relocate! Is that the case in most states, or just NC? It would be good to know if it was illegal here in GA. Is there somewhere online I can find out? We are in town, but in the country, so I would hope to relocate a coon out in the deep woods out of town if...

Thanks everyone I built the nest box pics on post #16

I like the idea of external nest boxes that protrude out of the coop, because they seem easier to access eggs and less stepping in poo. Will this idea work on a small coop? We were considering four boxes for a flock of 10-12. Also, is it more to construct boxes this way? Cost is deffinately...

Good Crops to grow and feed in GA

We live in South GA, and we are just in the planning phases of chicken rearing. While we are planning out our coop, I also wanted to consider planning out feed. We will have a permanent coop and run, but I would like to use some of my yard to grow some crops for feed. What grows well that I...

    Deep Litter plans

Thanks for the link. Some interesting stuff. We do have a problem with flies down here. I hadn't considered the heat as a problem for the deep litter, because I was thinking it might be helpful to stimulate the composting. We are in a neighborhood without restrictions, but I still want to...

"Coop de Gra" finished - wtf was I thinking? - Pic heavy

I like the trap door idea for cleaning. How is that working out? Ouch on your hand!! But the coop is beautiful. Nice work!

    Deep Litter plans

I am trying to design my coop, and I just came across the idea of deep litter. I like this! We were planning to try and elevate the coop off the ground enough to alllow the flock to hang out underneath and deter pests. I'm trying to understand the construction of a coop floor. We were going...
