Thanks! It looks like the blueish one is starting to turn more chocolate. Mine are in an enclosed run so they won't get taken by the hawks around here.
I have some chocolate oegb and one of my broody hens has started having her eggs hatch. 2 babies are whitish, 1 is black and the other is a beautiful blue! Is that normal?
I read where some people were not using any humidity for the first part of the hatch and having great success but I don't know if I'm brave enough to try that. It will help when I get the hygrometer for my next batch.
Thanks for the info, blucoondawg! Going to get that stuff before I do my next incubator batch. Right now I have 6 broody hens, though! 5 old english game bantams and 1 ameraucana.
blucoondawg, what thermometer and hygrometer do you use? And what humidity do you recommend starting my lockdown on on my next batch since i have no idea what it was on this last one?
Oh no! It sounds like I'm going to have my hands full! How do I know who's chicks are whose since the first hen went broody on the 20th and 2 others on the 25th and the last one on the 26th. Or would it be better to just seperate everyone now if I can?
I only have 9 that hatched out sucessfully. I'm going to get a hygrometer before I start another clutch. There were several that pipped but couldn't maneuver around to finish zipping. They were all backwards in their shells, trying to come out the narrow end so I guess that had something to do...
Thank you so much for replying! I wonder if I should move the mama hens to their own little places like a dog kennel or pen? They are first time brooders so I don't know if it will throw them off. I did move one hen to another nest when she went broody and climbed in with the first hen and...
I have 4 broody hens in 5 days now! 3 are in the same coop and not sure what to do about that. Will they be okay all together? I have several concerns such as how they will all get along, and all the nest boxes are raised off the floor. Any suggestions?
I ended up removing them after they are dry which is about 8 hours. I did notice that they do calm down and rest much better and quieter in the brood box under the light. Thanks for all the help!
Well, I've had 4 hatch so far and they are all doing great. I had to move the first two out after about 8 to 10 hours because they were knocking eggs every which way. I waiting till they were good and dry and walking around good before I did. They are resting much better in the brood box. I...
I'm on my first still air batch of eggs myself but a friend who has the huge cabinet incubators says he leaves them in for a day so they can dry off and stay warm. From all the reading I've done they can last up to 3 days. For myself I think I'm going to leave in for a day and then move to brood...
I'm working on my first incubator batch of chicken eggs and not sure if I'm doing it right. I had one egg wiggling on day 19 and 20 but today it hasn't moved at all! I'm using a Little Giant incubator and the temp has been holding steady at 100.5 at the top of the eggs and not sure what the...
Thank you so much for your reply. Really makes sense to me when I think about the climates that that are perpetually cold and still manage to raise healthy and happy chickens.
