    silkie sexing

I was excited to post pictures of my two little chicks here, in just a few weeks to get an idea of whether they are male or female but... as I watch the three inch tall cock fight style posturing that is occurring in their box every few minutes.... I'm afraid my mystery may be solved much...

    Silkie thread!

@ ChickNmama: If it works, I'll talk to yours and one other for free... then I'll start charging. I'd imagine that sort of power would be worth quite a bit! I have no idea what the parents are. These were sort of a 'back up and punt' sort of case. We first ordered a number of eggs, none of...

    Silkie thread!

For a year now, we have enjoyed the two retired Seramas my husband so desperately wanted. They are lovely little ladies with so much personality and occasionally give us the cutest little eggs.... but I've wanted Silkies for over a year now.... and..... Here they are!!!! A fellow teacher...

    Viva Las Vegas!

Wow! Take a few days away only to find so much great stuff happening here when I get back!! I'd love to quote everyone but I can't even keep track of which I wanted to comment on, there's so much! Firstly, 'WELCOME!' to the new folks! We're getting a great little group here! Then...

    Viva Las Vegas!

Hi Vegas Chick! No hospitalization here either. Waking ultra early to get horses ridden or run, then a little of work and a lot of rest/sleep before staying up late for more horse stuff. I am actually a substitute teacher too. I'm in school to be a SpEd teacher but am excited to just rejoin the...

    Viva Las Vegas!

I realize some of the real bonuses of living in Las Vegas is not having to worry about fleas and ticks. Does this carry over to chicken buts as well? I was just out holding one of our little girls and, within fifteen minutes, had three miniscule bugs crawling on my hand. When looking at pics...

    Viva Las Vegas!

Max, I'm telling you, it's something in the air about this abundance of roos. When we were looking for our hens, we kept getting the same story; 'I've got waaayyy too many roos and not enough hens'. The horse world seems to be under the opposite spell; lots of mares not as many...

    Egg eater!!

Just hours after getting our four Seramas home, one laid an egg.... and another proceeded to attempt to eat it..... I will be going to Michael's tonight for a couple of wooden eggs, as that seems like the easiest and least invasive way of dealing with it. If that doesn't work, food colouring and...

    Viva Las Vegas!

Quote: Okay, that makes a lot of sense. I think I would trust a broody over my own hair-brain. It sounds like you have potential to have a pretty productive hatch! How exciting!!!! LOL! too funny about your 'attack broody'! (Picturing a hen with teeth bore, Monty Python style.... Too funny...

    Viva Las Vegas!

I did call the lady from the Craigslist ad. She was so very nice but, as can so often happen, she has only a handful of hens but ten or more roos. She will be hatching again in December so we'll give a try again then if our flock allows. I did end up just placing a wanted ad on Craigslist and...

Excited about our new Dome Coop but questioning shelter size....

Nope, not a kit. My husband found an equation for building a dome, went to Home Depot and bought the pipe, then cut and prepared the, pieces, then put them together per the equation. I've told him he should sell kits.

    Viva Las Vegas!

Picking up our retired Serama hens this Saturday from a nice lady near Mt. Charleston! So so so stinkin' excited! I was wishing, during work today, that I could stop and pick up a head of cabbage for them, then come home and sit with them and our little 'frizzled terrier'. I know everyone talks...

Excited about our new Dome Coop but questioning shelter size....

Quote: Your statement on circular areas is absolutely true. I suppose I haven't put too much into the picture to really show scale. I think domes are definitely in the minority on coops but they make a lot of sense. This one actually started out as an experiment in camping shelters (as a...

Excited about our new Dome Coop but questioning shelter size....

Thank you so much! I was thinking that myself. We have the option of opening the garden to them. I'll put in a predator cover over top today. That will give them closer to 20 sq ft.
