In the 20s here. All this time and they still refuse to use the coops other than to lay their eggs in. The only exception is the silkie my brother gave me for my birthday, it slept comfortably inside.
They're all doing fine despite it being cold and wet out there.
Nope, none of them ever used it, every hen uses the coops. I had that in there just in case the cream legbar tried laying them on the ground (she never did) so I just took it out.
My Easter Egger Rooster for some reason likes to go inside a small igloo nesting box and make a purring like sound. The Naked Neck Rooster just looks at him like he's crazy. lol
My Naked Necks are finally starting to lay their first eggs.
They are a bit small but otherwise perfect shape and thickness. I feed them that scratch & Moore and it seems to do the job just right. I do have a cream legbar who is around a month older but I've yet to see any eggs that would...
I'm from Onalaska, on Lake Livingston. Great area to keep chickens and I love the feed store over in Coldsprings, that Scratch N' More is the same price as the cheapest feed at Tractor Supply but much much better.
Hello! I'm also from East Texas and am brand new to the chicken keeping!
I just culled my extra roosters day before as they were about to reach maturity so I'm now down to 6 Naked Neck Hens, 1 Cream Legbar Hen 1 Easter Egger Rooster and 1 Naked Neck Rooster.
The learning curve isn't as bad as...

This is what I used. 60 bucks, so much cheaper and gets the job done.
Skinning is easy but the skin is the tastiest part of the chicken!
I really didn't smell anything too bad, the hot water doesn't smell as bad as the coop, and I do it outside so you don't smell it anyway unless you get your face in it. lol
Once you do it for the first time you will wonder what...
I found this guy by my fence while I was walking my new robot lawnmower. He came up to me and was very friendly, which makes me think he once belonged to someone. I live by the woods but there is enough development here that I worry that it will fall prey to either stray cats or dogs or get...
As my Naked Necks reach maturity I knew the time would come to where I had to start culling the extra roosters.
At first I thought I had 5 (4 NN + 1 EE) roosters, turned out I had 8.
Eight out of 15 Chickens were roosters. I planned on keeping the EE and the naked neck rooster that likes me the...
