Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

We lease out the hayfields to our neighbor down the hill, and we sustainably harvest lumber to pay the property taxes. As it stands we aren’t doing much with the property but I’m hoping to change that. My dream is to turn it into an animal sanctuary, but in the near future I’m going to plant...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

Glad I’m not the only one! :gig Yes a pretty, mixed flock is exactly what I’m after. I’d like to have a colourful egg basket too, so Easter Eggers were one of the breeds I was considering (though I understand that they’re not technically a breed, but “mutts”). Along with those and the Bearded...

The method of applying herbicide that you’ve outlined here sounds very safe. I’d definitely feel comfortable doing it that way. Thank you for taking the time to offer me so many solutions! It’s greatly appreciated. :)

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

I don’t have pictures at the moment; the path leading up to the shed is buried under about 3 feet of snow. But it’s an old tool shed built from chip board and logs. It’s 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall. I wanted to add some 2x4s for extra support because so far as I know it’s...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

Starting with just two or three chickens in that little pre-fab coop is exactly what I was thinking of; preferably some sort of Bantams (like Bantam Bearded d’Uccles! OMG they’re too cute for words :love). I’d be letting my birds free-range often; giving them opportunities to forage and scratch...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

That all sounds like a blast to me! :clap Lots of work too, of course, but sometimes the work is half the fun. Hope you’ll keep us posted when this grand adventure of yours begins; I’d love to hear about your progress.

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

I mentioned earlier that I have a shed on my property. Modifying it was my original plan, but then I realized that with how much the project is going to cost I likely wouldn’t be able to finish it before winter. That would have been easy to miss though, with the way I tend to ramble. :gig...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

Points taken. Unless I find something acceptable on Kijiji I’m just going to wait until next spring to build the coop. As it stands the only thing I can find is a 8x4 chicken tractor, and it’s practically on the other side of the province so it’s not really an option.

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

It’s this one here: https://www.tscstores.com/COOPS-FEATHERS-XL-SUPERIOR-HEN-COOP-P55977.aspx They claim that it will hold 8 chickens, but people who reviewed it say they would only keep 4 or 5 in there. Looking at the dimensions, you’re probably right about it being too small even for that...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

I’ve just realized that it’s going to be a somewhat costly venture to convert the shed to a coop and build the run the way I want it. With how much I make in a month (Spoiler Alert: It ain’t much. :lau) I doubt I would be able to finish the project before Autumn. What I’m thinking I’ll do...

Thank you! I’m going to give that a read right now. :D

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

I’ve priced out materials and have a rough plan in mind for my coop. Once the snow melts a bit more I can take measurements and do some fine-tuning. The old tool shed I’m planning to convert is 8x4; I’m going to tear down the back wall to add another 4-8 feet, which will make it either 8x8 or...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

Not to worry - I will. :) From what I’ve been reading on here I’ve seen several people say that building a coop often takes longer than anticipated, and I certainly don’t want Chickens living in my porch all summer long. :gig Worst comes to worst if I can’t find any Pullets that I like once the...

Advice for a newbie: Chicks or Pullets?

I live on a big farm in the middle of nowhere; a rooster won’t be a problem. :D Having a rooster in the flock is actually part of my plan; I want to have one to help protect the girls when they’re free-ranging. They will be supervised while they’re out of their run because there are a lot of...
