Umm... I’m not that experienced to even know that! I’m going to look for and keep an eye on that. Thank you!

    Chick sudden death

We purchased chicks from a local farm. They are approximately a month old. Last night when we did our bedtime check, we found our mottled java chick, who had appeared incredibly healthy and vigorous up until that point, Laying stretched out. She was unable to stand and was listless. Within a...

I have a 1-2 week old red dorking that is not growing as fast as the other chicks. We left the chicks with friends experienced in chicken rearing for 2 days and when we got back the little dorking looked close to death. I held her and fed her water with a dropper and let her peck food out of...

I want good egg layers that are docile and friendly (I have kids). I was thinking Buff Orphingtons and Black Americaunas. I know these do well in the winter but am concerned how they handle the hot, humid summer

Nice! We are on a slope too and were originally going to make the run 6' tall but are now thinking it should be more like 4. How do you get into the run to clean it out?

    Run big enough?

Interesting point. I just don't want to be chasing chickens all over the neighborhood. We are very suburban and the ordinance has just passed...I will have wire on top of the run but want to be safe. I do want to have sunggly chickens though. :)

    Run big enough?

I am thinking maybe buff orphingtons. I don't want bantam chickens because they are more flighty.

    Fencing our run

Thank you for your advice.I plan to put chicken wire on the top, but it is so expensive to fence the entire run with 1/4" hardware cloth!

    Run big enough?

We haven't built the run yet. We are just starting on it. Keeping my fingers crossed!

    Fencing our run

We are considering building an 8x12 run 6 ft. tall with hardware cloth buried a foot deep and 2 ft up above ground and chicken wire everywhere else. We have a hawk but the chickens will be shut up in the coop every night so I don't know if we necessarily have to make the run predator proof for...
