I'm not positive what was wrong with her. I had her separated for a while so that she could heal and I think she just got thrown for a loop. The lighting was different and I think she may have just been really stressed. She stopped eating and drinking and laying eggs, and was very lethargic...
I have 2 RIRs, 2 Plymouth Rocks, a White Leghorn, and a Red SL Pullet (the one being picked on). But, they have been raised together from birth.
The RIRs seem to go after the Pullet, possibly because she's small. And while the other hens don't seem to take an interest in bullying her when the...
It's a really unfortunate situation. Although my RIRs have never been incredibly friendly, they never hurt any of the other hens seriously up until now.
The hen who's been getting picked on is a Red SL Pullet, and she may be a runt because nearly all of the other hens are quite a bit bigger...
I've raised my 6 hens from the time that they were 5 days old. I love them all but lately my
RIRs have gotten so aggressive that they really hurt my smallest hen.
I don't understand how all of a sudden they got so mean when they all lived together peacefully for about 2 years.
I've tried...
I haven't personally, but my SO may have done it. I'll ask when he gets home. Would be kind of unusual for her to get worms while being isolated though, and none of the other hens show symptoms.
I do plan to take her food out over night and see how she's doing in the morning. It just seems really dangerous to induce vomiting, but I have been massaging her crop so maybe that will help expel the blockage.
I'm really not comfortable with making her throw up, I've heard way too many stories about that going wrong and the hen dying. I did buy some yogurt with active cultures and she did eat some of that, hopefully it will help out.
I'm just worried that if it's sour crop or something then the food may not be good for it? I know plain yogurt with probiotics/live cultures is supposed to be good though, so maybe I'll stick to that for a couple days?
She hasn't been eating treats or her normal food, before making this thread I did attempt to feed her some plain sour cream. She did eat a few mouthfuls of that, so I'm thinking I probably should get some plain yogurt to feed her with. I hope she isn't sick :(
I had to separate one of my hens a couple weeks ago because she was being picked on, and I wanted to give her a chance to recover. All has been well up until now. She hasn't been laying eggs, doesn't seem to be eating or drinking much, and is laying down in her hay a lot.
I let her out for a...
Thanks for the idea! I just set up a second perch that they can now use. I'm also working on finding a few scratched up CD's and some empty jars to use for treat toys.
We just moved recently, so the grass is still growing in. At our last house, they did have grass to pick at and we would let them roam a little if supervised. We plan to do that again once the grass grows in. :)
I'm not entirely positive what breed one of my hens is, my best guess is that she's an Orpington due to her tannish-yellow coloring. She's in kind of rough condition at the moment (see other thread for details), so here are the pics of her that I have from before her little injury. The pics are...
