If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

What an interesting idea. I love the idea of the caged veggies and seeds but chickens do love to scratch where they eat. This topic has also been a concern to me since my chickens don't seem to do well on total free range. That may be because they are used to being fed and also going out during...

How to RAISE a good rooster.

I have had a couple of roosters lately that I received as adults or nearly so. The last was a gorgeous Partridge Rock that took down a hawk going after the hens. He was MEAN. My first clue should have been when I went to get him and reached down to pick him up and the lady said, "I can't...

    Fencing Help

You can buy netting on Amazon fairly cheaply and put that over your run. Bury the wire for your run at least 6" into the ground. I have a large run, covered by netting with the wire buried. I usually leave everything open into an orchard, but as my recent post says, we have had skunk issues...

    Skunk and chickens

There are weasels west of us, near the coast and also east of Portland. I've never seen one here but wouldn't rule it out. We have raccoons but I'm not sure what a ringtail is. I'll know if I catch it, though! :)

    Skunk and chickens

Head was left on all my birds. One of the neighbor's had only the head left. None of my birds died last night. I'm in NW Oregon, west of Portland.

    Skunk and chickens

Ignore the loss of eggs for a minute...all of my goose eggs plus some of the chicken eggs. For a week now, something has been going into the chicken run and killing one to two chickens per day. It doesn't eat much or any, for that matter. It would slit the throat, open the neck and sometimes...

    Egg eating chickens

Mine are doing this too. I have Black Australorps, RHRs, Americaunas, and Speckled Suffolks, in one flock. Another flock has Gold Stars (production) and Black Stars (production). It's mostly the black feathered birds who are doing this, although the Americaunas will puncture the shells with...

Does anyone know how I can get my geese out of the chicken house and into their own?

Penning her in probably would have been the best idea. I've already moved her and her eggs. When she went out, I picked up the nest box and moved it to the dog house. I then made the chicken coop uninviting by turning all the floor boxes (apple boxes) on their sides. It took her a bit to...

Does anyone know how I can get my geese out of the chicken house and into their own?

My 2 geese and 20 chickens live in an apple orchard with an additional run and hen house. In the run, there is also a dog house with a flip top lid I've converted to a goose house. The problem is, the geese won't go in the dog house. The goose goes into the chicken coop, chases the chickens...

Comment by 'Magpie1' in article 'Raising Baby Chicks- Do’s and Dont’s'

You might want to clarify the part about which food to feed chicks. I feel like you were trying to say chicks should be fed medicated feed if they haven't been vaccinated for coccidiosis and non-medicated feed if they have been vaccinated. Otherwise, interesting article.

    Medication for sour crop?

I know this is an older post but wanted to thank you as I am now dealing with this issue. My bird had no other signs than hunched appearance, no foul smell, grit available, no long grass, etc. I happened to turn her over to see if she was egg-bound and bloody discharge came out of her mouth...

Day-old chick shaking head, scratching ears, flopping over

The chick seems to have recovered. I'm guessing it was trauma caused by shipping. It will be interesting to see if that chick thrives. Thank you for your responses.

Day-old chick shaking head, scratching ears, flopping over

I just picked up my chicks from the post office purchased from a reputable hatchery. At least I've had good success with them before. It's been about 3 hours and one of the chicks is shaking it's head and scratching at it's ears. It does this so violently that it sometimes flops over on it's...

how do you process a chicken?

There are at least two really good posts on BYC with photos. One is by Frugal and is called, "Killing, Plucking, Eviscerating & Cutting Up Your Chicken-Graphic!", and the other one is by Booker81 and called, "Processing a Chicken at Home". If you enter, "processing a chicken" in the BYC...
