    Hen badly injured

And it will protect the wound bed...even if the skin doesn't graft back on, it will allow the underlying wound to grow in new tissue and when the old stuff falls off you'll have good stuff underneath! Agree don't ever let it dry out!

    Hen badly injured

Don't know if this will help, but the e-vet prescribed augmentin for my chickens when I had a similar incident, and then the chicken vet prescribed bactrim. I know you can order antibiotics for fish off of Chewy (they're the same as human antibiotics). Not sure if chicken antibiotics are easily...

How Do You Hold Your Chickens

Like a football. Under the arm, wings pinned to sides. Perfect for medicating...don't even need a towel.

Predator took all 5 hens last night! I feel horrible!

Don't have any great advice. I lost most of my flock to my own two dogs about 6 weeks ago, so I just want to say I understand the guilt and don't beat yourself up. Chickens are just so vulnerable. And they do grow on you. Don't even want to talk about what I've dropped on vet bills for my two...

Saw the chicken vet...dog attacked chickens update

I've been off the forum for several days because of schedule, but everyone here was so great with advice when my chickens got attacked by my dogs right before Christmas. We got to see the chicken vet last Saturday. Was hoping it would just be staple removal, but she was concerned by the amount...

    Next steps...healing, diet, boredom

Just scrambled up some eggs for them. It was one of their favorites when they were little but I haven't given it to them in a while. Hopefully they still love them.

That's a good idea. I'll see what my husband can fashion. He's great with stuff like that.

Really excellent advice thank you. Sadly there are no other chickens that survived, so that will make coop reintroduction a little bit easier. It seems warm today so I may take them out for a little bit and just watch them to make sure they don't peck each other. The run in the hallway cracks me...

    Next steps...healing, diet, boredom

They're in a big box with a cardboard divider. Unfortunately they cannot see each other but when I go down there I hear them singing to each other. I think we can do some visits, but the one is so raw and the other is much larger and was our dominant chicken, so it would need to be supervised...

    Next steps...healing, diet, boredom

First of all I can't thank everyone enough not just for the advice on dealing with my 2 poor dog chewed chickens, but also the totally non-judgmental empathy and support over the 4 that we lost. I'm posting this thread because my girls seem to be over the hump on surviving (the attack was 6 days...

Turns out I love them more than I thought!

Mac the Newf...I love it! My son has a propensity for naming critters old school gangster sounding names, hence one of the girls we lost last week was Jimmy the Chicken (I also have Frankie the Frog). I was terrified about dysplasia even though the dogs' mom and dad both had very good OFA hip...

Turns out I love them more than I thought!

They're brothers. They have great dispositions but are just a management issue right now. Just crashing their way through life as we try to impart some manners. Sorry to hear about your loss...we had been dogless for a few years after our 14 year old husky and 13 year old lab mix both passed. I...

"Only" 125 lbs . We looked at Great Pyrenees when deciding what kind of dogs to get, but I read they could be territorial...which can be a double edged sword with giant breed dogs.

I'll look into Kohler and I'm definitely leaning toward electric fence. They're sensitive pups, in spite of everything, and pretty quick learners. Just brutally strong at such a young age. If electric fencing can prevent this in the future and teach them to stay away, then I'm all for it.
