I'm 67 years young and disabled. To keep my mind healthy I decided to teach myself to do something I didn't know how to do. Raising chickens and gardening were my choices. It has truly been an adventure. I need others to aide me in accomplishing my goal. But when they do only what I need from them, then I have been successful in my endeavors. My first chickens were 33 brown leghorns females. I started them in my dining room. We then transferred them to an old rabbit coop. We, my husband and me built a chicken tractor with nest boxes. That became their new home. He refurbished an old chicken house and made a chicken run. That became their new home. In the meantime I ordered 10 brown leghorn females and 2 males and 10 buff orpington females and 2 males. I started them in the dining room and then moved them to the chicken tractor. We lost a few of the older leghorns to the hawks, about 6.
We were getting 21-24 eggs a day. My husband didn't believe we had predators so he would not put a top on my new run. As of today I only have 5 of my older ladies left. Also gone are my 2 leghorn roosters and 3 of my buff orpington females. I bought a pitbull puppy and she ate one of my leghorn babies and killed one of the buff orpington babies. June and July have proved to be the most tumultuous times. I am going to try to upload some pictures. I am not computer savvy.
