    Light Sussex sexing

I’m saying cockerel for this one: And pullet here: Definitely would prefer one of each so we can see the eating aspect of a slow growing heritage breed, but the hens are so pretty!

    Easter Egger Thread!

Hey everybody! If you got chicks this year, are they laying? What colors are they doing? Can you post and a color and a picture of the hen?

Butchered first chicken- did I do it right?

Another question- When resting the chicken, do you put it in a airtight bag, or do you leave it in the fridge air, or do you brine?

Butchered first chicken- did I do it right?

hi all! I butchered for the first time today- hoping you can help me answer some questions that came up. First, how long can I take to pluck before I need to move on to removing the organs? It takes me a long to pluck by hand, but I’m worried I willing compromise the meat by not gutting...

How important to paint the inside?

The only thing would think it would make a big difference on is if you had to decontaminate the whole thing at one point (hopefully not!). Then, you could just spray down/scrub....but that would be catastrophic situation health wise for your flock.

Ended Official BYC Contest—Post Your Best (Worst) Chicken Molt Pictures—Fall/Winter 2017

This takes the cake so far...that foot looks kinda gross! Poor thing. I bet she is beautiful normally.

    Double Laced Silver Barnevelder Chicks

Yeah, I am hoping that is the case! It is always so hard to tell whether the pictures that are online and not associated with a thread are examples of poor breeding/non-standard or if that is just how the breed's appearance progresses. Thanks!

    Average Chick Prices

I mean....your rooster and hen probably helped a bit ;) I would agree, they're worth whatever people will pay for them. Some places sell some types of chicks for $200, some can't get $2 for them. I'd do some research on what your local markets are doing and then work from there. Go to the local...

    Sexing Twentse Chicks

So, for those interested.... I think I have two females. I just don’t see how either could change their wing feathers so drastically to get to the male coloration. This pic is the one that I thought could be male given the less distinctive markings This is the other

    Treating new chicks for coccidiosis

Here’s a picture. The down ones are two of the Appenzeller chicks, and one polish. The Appenzellers are highly cuddly too, so maybe they were displeased with the inanimate brooder pad, and wanted companionship.

    Treating new chicks for coccidiosis

The baby chicks are no longer down/dumpy. Everybody is doing better as of yesterday (didn't get to see them in person today yet). They weren't cold the ~36 hours they were crying-they moved in and out of the heat pad normally....I think they were just a little over-worn from the shipping and...

    Double Laced Silver Barnevelder Chicks

Thank you, but I do know how they're supposed to look when they are fully grown into their adult feathers. I'm curious about the intermediate stages. For instance, they're brown/downy feathered right now, with the wing feathers inbound. However, they look a little brown-ish still. I'm wondering...

What common meatie ailments do you see?

Hello all! I'm about to start harvesting my first batch of meaties (Rainbow Rangers, then Grey Rangers later). I know some of them breathe heavily, but it seems like it is from the weight they lug around, rather than an infection or defect. They do sneeze right when I first put food down, but I...
