I have two hens who are sitting on eggs right now and I want to let them hatch their eggs. But I have a million questions because I've never done this before. Are turkey hens good moms? Will they raise their young? Will the other turkeys kill the babies? Do I need to move moms and eggs to a...
Hi all! I thought I'd share a picture of my favorite toms. No idea on breed. I got them from Porter's in an "assorted crosses" box, so I guess they're mutts. :) I thought it was kind of them to line up for a beauty shot.
I'm joining you guys! Hatching out chicks for a work friend of my husband and (hopefully) three poults for us. The chicks should hatch 10 April and the poults on the 18th.
We found one of our buff orpingtons with a nest of eggs under one of our trees yesterday. She apparently snuck out of our fenced in chicken yard to lay her eggs. My husband candled one when we moved her to a chicken tractor for protection and estimated it at about 1.5 week development. So, we're...
We got crazy busy and I wasn't able to update, but ours started hatching last Thursday. We ended up with 1 non-starter, 1 unhatched, and 19 hatched chicks.
Candled today and all but 7 of our eggs are showing obvious development. :celebrate Only 1 of the 7 is obviously not doing anything. Planning to candle again on Tuesday before getting rid of the non-starters.
I reread To Kill a Mockingbird a few years ago for a class and it was so much better than I remembered from high school! I think I was too young to understand it at 14 years old.
I just started Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson, a novella in his Stormlight Archive series. Haven't gotten far enough into it to know if I like it, but I've liked everything else I've read that he's written.
My favorite lady! We call her Speckle Suspect because when we first got her my littlest couldn't say "Sussex" and it came out as "suspect". She's sweet tempered and curious, always one of the first to greet us when we come into the chicken yard.
I set 24 barnyard mix eggs. Very excited to see what the chicks look like! Last year we had really low fertility, but there are three more roos out there this year.
