    Underactive oil gland?

Yes, he is an only duck (unfortunately I can't get him a pair up until next year, as mandarins are very rare in my area). However, he stays with us all day and became so tame that he sleeps in my lap. Today I decided to stop free feeding him, as a last resort to his "pickiness". Instead, I...

    Underactive oil gland?

He prepared the feed at home and gave all his ducks a mix of wheat, corn, buckwheat, flax and so on. I have about 2 kg left of that feed, but I switched him to premium pellets because he was very picky and ate just the wheat. If it was up to him, he would eat only wheat and bugs (one day I gave...

    Underactive oil gland?

So nearly two months ago I bought a male mandarin duck (juvenile) from a local breeder. Up until last week, once every two days I provided him a large & deep bowl with warm water where he could take a bath. At first, the only part that would get wet was the back of his neck, but it gradually got...

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

If you are interested, you can read this study about the effects of feeding rye to poultry: https://cdnsciencepub.com/doi/pdf/10.4141/cjas60-017

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

As far as I know, rye has a low content of protein (about 10%) and doesn't meet the requirements of some vitamins (like niacin). It is also high in fiber, so you must be careful with that. I'm not an expert, but from what I've read, you can use this cereal safely for up to 15% of their diet.

    Incubation and imprinting

Thanks for the tips! I wanted to get three, because it's a higher chance to get a male and a female from that lot. The breeder agreed to take back the odd one out :) As for the feed, I live in Romania and unfortunately Mazuri isn't available in my country. I will feed them the second best option...

    Incubation and imprinting

Hi everyone! Hatching season is finally here! After over a year of searching, I finally found someone in my area who breeds my fav bird species, the mandarin duck! If everything will be alright, I will get 2-3 ducklings that will hatch this season and raise them as "pond pets". Now, I am very...

Duck Feed Study - HELP NEEDED!

I know my request is quite challenging, but unfortunately average values won't help me in my study. General recommendations are already available on the internet (e.g. Mazuri manufacturer suggests 1/4 cup of pellets per lb of body weight), but these numbers are only indicative. In my study, I...

Duck Feed Study - HELP NEEDED!

For my current study (see footnote), I need some volunteers who can track their duck's food intake for exactly one week. More specifically, anyone who is currently feeding Mazuri Maintenance Diet and is willing to weight some meals, please send me the following info: 1. Age, gender and weight of...

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

Can you share that multivitamin supplement, please? Now that the allergy season is on its way, I would like to boost my doggy's immune system a lil bit. Maybe I will also find a retailer that sells it locally.

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

It's so nice to meet other people that are interested in this holistic approach! I agree that there is little to no research in bird feeding, but I'm sure the basics of nutrition apply to all species. The challenge is to study what each individual would thrive on and apply this pattern by trial...

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

You can join the Facebook group Avian Raw Whole Food Nutrition to find out more about this concept. Most people there have parrots, but I've seen a few that also have chickens and ducks.

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

I strongly support giving them exactly what they need (also because any leftover = lost money), but we shouldn't rely only on one recipe, but lots of blends that are rotated over a period of time

    Duck Feed Requirements Advice

The ducks are smarter than you might think :) If you offer a flock a blend of 20 types of chopped veggies, each one will eat only what they need and balance their own diets. Pellets don't offer them this opportunity. Also, something the manufactures won't tell you: these highly processed feed...
