Now a couple of days later and things have improved considerably.
I think the canestan has worked well and thankfully now the urate discharge has stopped. That is making a huge difference.
She's eating well and she's gone back onto the normal food that everybody else is eating and she's...
The vent has stayed in! That's extremely good news. She's also produced some poop herself sitting the night. And, something I'm very pleased about, her crop was empty this morning.
The less good news is that she's still leaking urates at about one drip every 10-15 seconds. The scaly build up...
Thank you.
I lubricated her anus and she managed to push a fairly big one out. So I think it's the issue that the urates are just dribbling out of her without mixing with the poop and effectively softening/lubricating it. I'm no expert on this but it would appear logical because it is...
Thanks for the replies and encouragement.
Today is a much better day. She's lively and interested in just about everything. She's eating well but she's very thirsty and the problem with that is if you don't restrict her water, she drinks too much and then starts regurgitating it. The urates...
Excellent advice.
Her prolapse is very messy. The urates are oozing out continually, so anything exposed get a coating on which goes hard. I clean and moisturise regularly. It's a tough old battle.
She's perked up a bit since I last wrote.
Sorry for the delay.
I've been trying to catch up with many of the things I failed to do when taking care of Luna.
Yesterday was a good day. Today not so much. She ate lots yesterday but no poop really came out of her. A big puddle of urates and a crop that isn't empty. So basically there's a...
Thank you.
She came out of the op well. She had about 10 stitches in total. She came home (very long drive...) but apart from the first hour where she was trying to settle, once she got comfortable, she just sat and watched the world go by and slept.
At home, she ate well and drank. I kept...
Thanks for the reply.
I'm currently sitting in a cafe having driven 3.5 hours to the poultry vet. She's being operated on as I type this.
Fingers crossed. I do realise there is a risk - the vet was very clear about that but her heart and lungs were strong and she's in fine fettle other than...
Thank you.
I managed to get a bit of it off yesterday. It was like a rubbery costing once the hard bits came off. I left a fair bit on but pushed the prolapse back in. It stayed in for about an hour and then she went to bed. This morning, she has pooped a lot but sadly it is out again.
I...
Oh no. I'm so sorry!
I know that pain only to well and it is horrible. Your husband is right though. You saved her from being culled and she had a happy retirement thanks to you.
As for vets, it's so difficult to find an avian specialist. I've found a few but they are not all open to doing...
Yes, I suppose what I'm asking is do you go by the tablet content or the actual PPE calcium that would provide? The difference is that it's 1.5 tablets of the former and 3 of the latter.
Thanks. Yes, I've been using vaseline but the prolapse is so wet (as in tissue wet) that it doesn't stick. I found Manila honey better. I'll try spraying her. It's nighttime that's the issue. That's when the urates stick and go hard.
Just to be clear, do you agree about the dosage? The...
