    Rooster Broken Leg

When my chicken broke her leg below the hock, the vet said I must keep an eye on her toes. If they get hot, then there may be an infection or the bandage could be too tight. She did say thatwhen bandaging, always leave room for swelling.

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

I'm in Sierra Madre, CA near Pasadena. Thank goodness the weather is warmish for her to live outside in a hay room. I have a big sign in Spanishinfront of her nest that informs the guys to avoid her space. Everything is ok now, it is just when she leaves with her babies to scrounge for food...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

That is an idea that I've tinkered with however, I live in a tiny apartment (it does have a closed in patio.) Mackmack stayed overnight with me and pearched on a homemade pearch atop some highly stacked boxes in my living room. I spent all day picking up poopy balls and cleaning carpet stains...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

Actually Cloverleaf Farm, the majority of the workers that work NEAR my old barn saw her with her cast on as I carried her back and forth to work every day. Basically, I was known to them as the "loca lady" who crazily paid to have a chicken fixed. I purposely paraded her in my arms for 1 month...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

I too, am trying to figure out how to compensate for the financial deprivation. It's not easy. I know Mackmack is not worth $500 but "perhaps her eggs will amount to something," I keep telling myself. "Maybe I'll eventually have 500 babies and then each chick will value it's monetary equivalent...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

I did candle one this a.m. and saw a spider-looking, vein-type redish line inside. I think this is a good sign according to the pictorial demo of "How to candle". I got scared to check anymore. Mackmack tried to bite me. It was, however, one of her smaller eggs so, what little I've learned here...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

Oh that was a great website on candling. I arrive at work at 4 am so it will be dark and I can check them tomorrow. I am still a bit afraid of Mackmack's temperament though. It does seem like the best thing to do is check to see if any of the eggs are "bombs". I would die if one exploded. OOOHHH!!!

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

One more tantalizing question please.... I thought that I shouldn't move the eggs (to candle them) or else that will rattle the little developing chicks inside. I would love to see inside one but am afraid to giggle and deform an embryo. Before I started feeding Mackmack in her nest, she did...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

Thanks ChicknJ, Cloverleaf Farm & Rancher Hicks for the support. I really couldn't find info about how the "hen atop her eggs" thing really worked. And yes I am getting a little silly over this ordeal. I just don't understand it or am I very comfortable with it. I promise I will keep y'all...

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

Thanks Freeholder for the info. But because her eggs were cold does that mean they won't hatch? I checked out the Chicken Breeds section of this website and am 90% sure she is a Welsummer. The majority of free ranging roosters and hens here look like Welsummer Partridge type. She has the same...

Thank you for responding. Yes, she'd been hanging out with a rooster for about a month. I hope they don't EXPLODE! Ahhh!

    Intimidated Chicken Caretaker

Hi Chicken Lovers ~ I am new to this forum and horribly new to chicken rearing. I rescued a broken-legged chicken 2 months ago at a racehorse barn area. $500 later (vet bill, still kicking myself) this young hen laid her first 12 eggs and began sitting on them 1 week ago. I moved her nest...
