    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Anyone in northeast Mass. interested in some older birds - 3 year old RIRs, Barred Rock, and Easter Eggers? I have two of each, and would sadly part with as many as four total. need to make some room in the coop & run in case we have as much snow as we did last winter. Healthy birds, laying...

Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray = eliminate feather pecking!!!

Had a bad situation about a month ago with one of our Easter Eggers was getting bullied by our five other hens (1 other EE, 2 BRs, and 2 RIRs). All of the feathers on her butt were pecked off, she was bleeding from the skin on her butt, she wouldn't go out of the coop to eat or drink much and...

How deep is your PDZ poop board?

6 hens. No poop board for me. I have a 4x4 elevated coop, probably 3 feet high at the peak. Roosts are about a foot off of a plywood base with vinyl flooring squares, probably like what chickiegrrl described. Floor covered with about 2 inches of Sweet PDZ. Clean once a week with a metal...

"Double fence" keeps hens from escaping.

They all could escapee before, although my easter eggers are too skittish to try. The RIRs and BRs would come and go as they pleased.

"Double fence" keeps hens from escaping.

Thought I'd share a little trick we figured out about 10 days ago. The black fence fence around the outdoor portion of the run (6' x 10', we call it the chicken porch), is from Lowes, 36" high. Very inexpensive, but obviously not high enough to keep the girls in. I was keeping a black golf net...

Sound-activated barking dog to keep hens quiet?

I may get flamed for this, but here goes: I live on a 1/3 acre suburban lot, and my six hens are noisy. The noise last from about 8 am until about noon. The noise doesn't really bother me, but it bothers my wife because she thinks it bothers the neighbors. Speaking with the neighbors won't...

What size are your nest boxes?

I have some pics on my blog. Better big then small is right -- especially because I sometimes get two or three girls trying to crowd into one next box at once.

what do all u cold climate chicken owners use for bedding in your coop

Surprised nobody mentioned pellets yet. I have aspen pellets over linoleum over a plywood floor raised 36 inches off the ground. The pellets are great -- they don't get all overt the place outside the coop like shavings do. Plus they sya very dry -- I have a poop board though, so the pellets...

going on day 3 with no power (nor'ida)

I was just complaining to my wife that the power never goes out any more and the kids won't enjoy those times (I always thought it was fun when I was a kid). But, three days? That would be too much. I need to be careful what I wish for.
