What kind of a chicken do I have?

I think you have a Black Maran. I have Copper Maran's, Blacks and Cuckoos. Yours looks like mine at 14 weeks - sometimes they develop the red comb - or light reddish grey or keep the black. Look at images in a google or bing search.

New Chicks attacked by my original flock.

Update on mom & chicks. We are 3 1/2 wks old. Mom is now taking them out into the big field with the other chickens. She is still very protective, but the other hens know now not to mess with her or the chicks. She hasn't taken to the new coop yet - but I've been enticing her with treat time...

New Chicks attacked by my original flock.

Thanks so much. Mom has been teaching them to forage already. I think we will open up her outdoor pen to the big acreage and watch her to make sure it works well. She has never been in the new "big" house yet - so she probably will bring the chicks back to her old chicken house. We also have...

Update to my naked neck. She had 10 eggs and we are pretty sure they were all hers. She hatched 8 of the eggs successfully - 6 little naked necks and 2 regular looking kids. Dad is an Orpington, so her genes are stronger than his!! LOL. Anyway - the kids are 2 1/2 weeks old and goers. We...

What would you suggest for sleeping arrangements in the big coop? We aren't set up to separate them from the big flock at night. We have an old chicken tractor, but the other chickens could get to mom & kids.

New Chicks attacked by my original flock.

This is so interesting. My chicks are being raised by mom. They are just 2 1/2 wks old and boy are they explorers. I didn't think they could get out of their outside coop - but they did, so yesterday spent making it chick escape free (they found little holes to squeeze thru, then couldn't...

When can they go out to the coop?

I have a mama that hatched 8 eggs. These guys just turned 2 weeks old and mama has them out in the sunshine in a pen so they are protected. Mom makes all the decisions - I love it, I wouldn't be so brave as she is. She is a fierce little hen & boy oh boy you better not frighten her chicks...

I am so excited. First broody hen!!! We have missed her for a couple days - she came out this morning to water & drink then back under the hen house on her nest. 10 eggs!!! We will move her tonight to the chicken tractor in the chicken house. Hopefully she will move OK. 19-21 days to go...

    Shed (or Barn) attached coop

Nice Job. We are getting ready to expand our coop - actually build a new one. We have the cutest chicken house - good for about 16-18 chickens - but we just inherited 14 more chickens - so decided to build a bigger building to handle all of them. Will use some of your ideas!! - By the way...

    drooping comb

Have a hen with a drooping comb. Anyone know what that means? She never fully feathered after her molt, and she's looking poorly compared to the rest of my chickens. I'm wondering if she is even laying anymore.
