    I was given a chicken that has turned out to be a cockerel. I cannot keep him. I live in Southwest Riverside County California. He is free to any who is interested.

    We had a gap over the top of the nest box door. The hubby installed some garage door weatherstrip along the inside to close it off to drafts. Worked great.

    Dust Baths.

    Cleaning the dust bath only takes a minute and they do make a mess of it. they may not care but I do. And the peat moss does absorb the moisture as I found out during a recent downpour but it dried out pretty fast.

    I designated a space under their ramp and against the back 2x4 rail of the run the rest is lined with a couple of bricks and large rocks to keep it contained. I mix dirt sand and peat moss.     I started my book as just a personal creative writing project but grew to a short story that was suitable for middle grade school reading, I think a bit over 10,000 words. Do you have a target group of readers in mind?

    I'd go with what you are familiar with, the buff orp. Maybe write a game bird as an additional character to the story.

    I observed the neighbourhood chickens many months and ended up writing a children's story based on some of the happenings and sprinkled with some life experiences of mine. Windsong Wendy Ps...that lead to my obsession to finally get some of my own hens.
