Brinsea Octagon 20 advance incubator review

I trust the machine for the humidity. No reason to trust myself though. Two days ago I woke up in the middle of the night to a nonstop whirring of the pump. I had forgotten to refill it, and now humidity had been 40% for many hours, while lots of eggs were hatching. In the end 23 of 26 hatched...

Brinsea Octagon 20 advance incubator review

Mercury is supposed to be reliable, as far as I know - as long as it shows decimals.

No, no no! Humidity down to 40% DURING hatching

Thanks for all the encouragement. In the end 23 out of 26 hatched, so the humidity disaster was no big deal apparently. I had to put down one chick (crooked neck and splayed legs) - it couldn't move at all and was clearly not going to make it. One of the later hatchers also looks a bit strange...

No, no no! Humidity down to 40% DURING hatching

Looking good! 9 hatched so far without problems, all healthy. So I guess the humidity loss didn't have an impact on anything else than my mental health... Jeeez, running around in a towel at 4 am in the icy laundry room, spitting yucky water from fixing the humidity pump, wires all over the...

    Hatching store bought eggs?

Well, supposedly we don't have any roosters here either. My grandparents/aunt ran a commercial egg farm, and they discovered that they had 2999 hens and 1 rooster in their latest shipment... So I guess mistakes can happen, and if they are free range, then miracles happen :)

Brinsea Octagon 20 advance incubator review

Hmmm - I think I have the Advance Eco (7 eggs, automatic turner), and the Rolls Royce Octagon with automatic turner and automatic humidity pump. I used an external thermometer that I placed inside the incubator (at the top level of the eggs). I tried all kinds of cheap thermometers first, but...

    Hatching store bought eggs?

We had a fun story in the newspapers last year, of someone who buy ordinary eggs in the store and successfully hatching a couple of chicks. Since them, more people have tried, and there are several stories of successful hatches. Is this common in the US? I live in Norway where eggs are farmed...

Brinsea Octagon 20 advance incubator review

Just a little addition from me: I have had some issues with the thermometer with both my Brinseas (Octagon Advance 20 with external humidity pump, and Advanced Eco for 7 eggs). One shows too high temperatures, and one shows too low temperatures. The temperature is constant, so once I figured...

No, no no! Humidity down to 40% DURING hatching

Just some extra info: I set the humidity to 75% now to make up for the lost hours. Normally I dry hatch at 35-40% for the first 18 days, then 65% for the last 3 days. Maybe I'll turn it down to 65% after breakfast. It is 5 am here now, so I should probably go to bed, not sit up waiting for...

No, no no! Humidity down to 40% DURING hatching

I feel like I am jinxed... last time the power went out, this time I wake up and find that the humidity pump has gone dry. Stupid mistake not to check that the container had enough water, I don't know how I missed that. Anyways - I got humidity back up after some home-made engineering with the...

    Disaster? Power-out after lock-down

Oh! Thank you so much! I hope you are right, and I don't mind the extra wait, as long as they hatch so that my eager customers can get their chicks - some have been waiting since early July - I had a failed hatch in August... Fingers crossed!

    Disaster? Power-out after lock-down

Iiiik! My hatching projects seem to be jinxed! Finally a successful batch of eggs - I candled them all yesterday evening, and 22 out of 24 were nicely developed. Then I had a new freezer delivered this evening, and the delivery guyd (or useless husband) pulled out the plug. I discovered it...

    Business idea: Chicken plucker service?

Ah... reality has set in. Probably a pretty bad idea. Also considering disease control - if people start bringing all kinds of birds to my property, even if I don't let the birds interact, I guess disease could transfer pretty quickly. Well well, back to the drawing board - I got lots of ideas :)

    Business idea: Chicken plucker service?

Good point - I'd have to look into the legal side of this. But slaughtering and consuming my own birds is ok, and if customers bring their animals for me to slaughter for them, they consume their own birds as well. But I might need some kind of licence for the slaughtering part so that it is...

    Business idea: Chicken plucker service?

Hi, Fed up with my 9-5 job, and looking for supersmart ways of financing a lazy lifestyle at home :) So - I sell some chickens, and consider expanding into mealworm production, kalp production etc. Now I have this chicken plucker idea, since I have some roosters that need to go, and I also...
