We are looking on building a new chicken coop, and we need to make it predator-proof. We have mostly had problems with weasels. We have a duck house right now that has a wooden floor, and we know that will not do. Rats keep chewing through the floor and leaving holes big enough for weasels...
update from me: we still haven't seen any trace of the missing mom and ducklings. I'm afraid she's probably not coming back. I keep going outside every time I hear peeping, but it's just the older ducklings. :(
We have found two of the missing chicks, dead. The other 28 are nowhere to be seen...
the ducks that survived usually sleep in the duck house. We don't close the door at night anyore (to prevent other problems) but with a large group of adult ducks, the older ducklings were safe.
The ducklings who disappeared / were killed were born in a nest outside the duck house and the mother...
life is not fair! I am ready to give up keeping animals.
we had a bad predator attack last night. Something opened the chicken coop where we keep our chicks. All the chicks are gone. No trace, no dead chicks, nothing.
If that wasn't bad enough, we found three dead ducklings nearby. They were...
Hi everyone,
Sorry I've been away for a while. I will once again have to play catch up with this thread.
On my end, we have lost a few ducklings to an unidentified predator. We were closing the duck house at night to protect them, but it turns out there was a litle gap by the door big enough...
We keep chicken (laying hens and some chicks) and muscovy ducks. In the past, we have had really bad problems with a weasel. It killed 7-8 young ducks last summer, and all our chicken (15 of them) this winter.
Now, we also have rats in the shed that is used for our ducks.
Would getting a barn...
Miss Lydia - I am sending good thoughts to your poor injured duckling. I hope he recovers.
stonykill - those ducklings are so cute! congrats!
On my end, the new mom is doing great. I checked on the babies this morning to make sure all 18 were still there, and I counted 19! I re-counted to be...
sad update: the poor little guy passed away during the night. I was able to make him eat a bit yesterday, but he never seemed to gain strength. He still wasn't holding his head or even peeping very much. Poor baby.
On the bright side, his brothers and sisters are doing great. I counted this...
Hello everyone,
Mind if I join you?
We have muscovy ducks living free-range. We have two males and nine females. So far, we have had 5 broody females, two whose ducklings have hatched, and three still waiting.
The first female to have her babies was nesting in a very inaccessible (and...
So now our second batch of ducklings is born and it has gone really well, overall.
Most ducklings were born Sunday / Monday. 21 in total, 3 of which have died.
Yesterday (Tuesday), the mom took her 18 surviving babies out and did not seem interested in her nest anymore. So I went and cleaned...
thanks for the advice!
a little update: while we were having lunch and planning on how to move the ducklings, we saw a little peepint yellow thing running through the field. Turns out one of the duckling fell off the nest and was on an adventure. We caught him and managed to bring the nest...
When we set up the duck house, we put a storage area around 7 feet off the ground to store our stuff. We tried to make sure the ducks couldn't get in there, but one of them outsmarted us and went to live there most of the time. She has built a nest there and now ducklings have started to hatch...
thanks everyone!
I forgot to mention where I was. I live in Quebec, Canada. Somewhere between Montreal and Quebec City
I have not yet looked at American seed suppliers. I'm not sure if they are allowed to ship across the border.
good news, the ducks went into their new home last night.
unfortunately, one was missing (and is still missing as of this morning). But that is the danger of free-range I guess
