I've got a broody hen who'd like some eggs. I can give her my own, but they'll just be barnyard mixes. If you raise a specific breed (large fowl) and have some extra eggs for hatching, PM me what you have. I'd definitely be interested! I'm in the Concord/Chichester area. :)
So I'm starting to plan my spring hatching project with my kiddos at school. Thinking we'll do a compare/contrast between chicks and ducklings this year. I think they will love it. I will be looking for fertile duck eggs. I would love mini appleyards, but I know they are hard to come by. Or...
I'm wondering if anyone here does or knows someone who processes chickens? I've had someone lined up for months and today was the day. Well, they came, they set up, and unfortunately their plucker decided today was the day it would stop working. They had no choice but to pack up and my birds...
Here is my mama leghorn and her babies four having a dust bath on this gorgeous day! They watch her so closely and do everything she does. They are becoming very good little foragers already! I love all the flying dirt in this photo. I could just watch them all day. :)
Yeah I'm sure I'll be able to tell fairly quickly once they start feathering. I had just read in a few places that they can be sexed at hatch according to the color of their down and/or the spot on their heads. Just wondering if there was any truth to that or if anyone had any experience with it.
So my broody leghorn hatched four out of seven babies yesterday, day 20. Today, the remaining three eggs remain the same, not a pip on any of them. I'm not the best at candling, but I'd say one is definitely not going to hatch (too much light coming through I think) but the other two are still...
So one has more silvery down on its back with a pretty defined head spot and the other is definitely darker all around with more of a smudge on its head. Thoughts?
A week later, one has a bit more white in the feathers, but I'm thinking (hoping) both females. What's your vote?
Day 20 and my leghorn is officially a mama to a healthy Easter Egger and during my quick inspection,it appears a cuckoo marans and a white leghorn are on their way. So exciting! So proud of my little exception to the rule. :)
So it's short notice on this one, but my broody leghorn has almost made it to day 20 and one of her eggs has already pipped! I can hear cheeping underneath her and I am just SO excited!! :D Please note she is not in the dog crate pictured below any more. Once I felt comfortable that the other...
So do you keep her in the kennel for the entire 21 days, then? That's the part I'm going back and forth on.... I definitely want them to have their own space at least for the first few days after hatch. I was also thinking of keeping her separated (in the cage) for a few days just to be sure...
Thank you, that's exactly what I was worried about space-wise. I had read that other people would section off part of the coop for their broody so that was my thought with this.... I was attempting to keep the other hens from getting in her way. But if that's not a big worry, then I'll just...
Brand new to this and would love your advice. My leghorn went broody very unexpectedly a few days ago. I've tried removing her from the nest and distracting her with treats, but she just goes right back. She is in the zone... So, today I got my hands on about 8 fertile eggs and I'm going to...
Hello all- So, of all the breeds I have right now, my white leghorn has decided to go broody! I hate to deny her the chance to hatch babies, but since giving up our rooster a few weeks ago, I have no fertile eggs to put under her. If you're in the Concord area and have some fertile eggs I could...
