Great article - I love my bantams - silver laced wyandotte and Polish silver laced plus some crosses :) And the little Polish Bantams were very reliable layers last year unlike the silver laced which kept going broody!

Is it ok to separate hens from chicks

Thank you. I felt that they would be ok but as I have never done this bit before it's good to know that I'm not about to do the wrong thing!

Is it ok to separate hens from chicks

Hi Everyone I need to sort out my chicks and hens. At the moment I have three hens and a cockerel in the main run. A hen with one chick in another small run, a hen with two chicks in another run and 1 chick on his own who has to move inside at night time. I would like to put all the chicks...

Comment by 'MarionCraig' in item 'Polish'

I have two Polish silver laced bantams and they are great. Good layers as well for a more 'unusual' breed. One of them I can see her eyes quite well and she is very inquisitive. The other one is slightly fluffier and she can't see me when I approach from the side. However they have...

Bit depressed this morning. Yesterday a chick managed to hatch - when I checked a little while later chick was to the side of the mother getting cold so I tucked it back under her. This morning I checked under whilst she was having food and chick was dead - perhaps I moved it in too far? Also...

Do mother hens help the chick out of the egg?

I have a bantam silver laced wyandotte who is hatching some eggs as I write. I have been observing closely. The first egg pipped yesterday but no chicks out yet. When I was watching (discreetly) just now she moved and I could see a pipped egg and could see the chick moving, mother then had a...

    hatching with a broody

Hi everyone. This is my second attempt at getting a successful hatch with a broody hen. Can anyone tell me how long the chicks stay under the mother before they emerge? I can hear some cheeping. Mother hen is in with the main flock in a separate box- I will move her and chicks when the hatch...

    first time broody question

Thank you very much. I think I will leave her where she is and keep an eye on her. She was so determined to be back in the main coop that she made the choice for me.

    first time broody question

Hi all - I have just tried to get my broody hen to sit on a clutch of eggs in a separate coop to where she was - no joy. So I moved the box I had made with the eggs in back into the main coop and within one minute she had gathered them all up (11 eggs) and was sitting on them. My question is...
