    Infected facial wound on hen!

Hello all, Maude (the hen) passed away last night. Thank you everyone who helped for your expertise and guidance. I will be checking my other hens routinely for canker from now on.

    Infected facial wound on hen!

I've been giving yogurt and eggs daily but I will try soaking her feed to get some more fluids in her. Wish there had been expedited shipping on her meds, it will be so sad and frustrating if we lose her before they even get here.

    Infected facial wound on hen!

I'm not sure if she has drank on her own but she is sort of petering around. I did give her pedialyte with a syringe this morning and will do so again this evening. She is on antibiotics as well as cleaning her lesion every day and applying antibacterial ointment. We had a very hot day...

    Infected facial wound on hen!

She took a turn for the worse this morning. She is very lethargic, ruffled feathers, her eyes are totally red (not bloodshot, they're just red?) and very pale comb. I think we might lose her to secondary infection :-/

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Thank you! Yeah, we have a TSC and a small feed store. The nearest Petsmart is about 45 mins. I'm definitely taking pics every step of the way and will upload afters if she makes it through. I'm curious to see how her face will heal (hopefully it does). This is my second year with my own...

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Thank you so much for the replies. Undortunately we are very rural. I checked for API GC when we went to the local feed store and they did not carry it. I will remove the nodules so that she has a chance of holding out until the meds are delivered. She is still chipper and laying eggs.

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Last question, I promise! (maybe) The FishZole will be here in 4-11 business days. Meanwhile the canker is moving from the walls of her beak backwards to the esophogus. I read to NOT remove the canker nodules, as it creates more bacteria. However, I'd hate to lose her to this while the...

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Just placed the order for the FishZole, hope the little lady can hold on for the shipping time but at least we will have it if it hits any other chickens. Thanks for all your help and patience.

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Okay thanks! Will giving the antibiotic in the mean time hurt? I know it's generally not good to give antibiotics without reason but I noticed some wheezing recently anyway.

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Just to update: She is still doing well. She eats and drinks great and is quarentined. No other birds have shown symptoms so far. I am cleaning and putting antibiotic ointment on the lesion every day. Went to pick up FishZole and neither the pet store nor the feed store had it, but the...

    Infected facial wound on hen!

I know I've seen small wild birds drink from their waters, never pigeons though. Who knows. I feel at such a loss. I hope we can get her back to normal but if this has spread throughout the flock it seems futile.

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Thanks for the input everyone! It has been a pretty unusually warm and humid week, we've had a ton of rain and whether in the 70s but I haven't noticed any mosquitos. I'll quarentine and treat for canker. I really hope it hasn't spread already but if it's that infectious that seems...

    Infected facial wound on hen!

Thanks! We can definitely seperate her and give the meds. I'm curious, is there any way besides a vet test to know the difference between canker and wet fowl pox? Is one more common than the other? The symptoms/pictures I have seen comparing them look so similar. I did read that canker is...

    Infected facial wound on hen!

So, what I did was bring her in for a bit and soaked a cotton pad with an antibiotic wash and soaked the sore for a bit. It didn't seem to do anything. I was really at a loss because there isn't anything to "clean" out, it's all a solid mass, not pus like I initially thought. I could be more...
