Update one hr later: Just put 4 redstar x and 2 EE under a broody hen. Can't wait to see what happens.
I kept adjusting the thermometer with my first hatch...just a few degrees up and down. My results were lousy. I learned to turn the bator on for a whole week before putting in the eggs. Then it's "set it and forget it". I do keep a 2nd thermometer inside just in case, though.
I know this is a silly question, BUT.....
I got into chickens last year. On perusing supplies, I have found that there are quail egg turners. My question is: What's the deal with quail?
Are you guys raising them to eat? to turn loose into the wild? you like having them around? What?
I put sponges in the bottom of mine and little dishes of water under the screen as well. Humidity was still a challenge. Or maybe my hydrometer was off?
I think I would like to participate. I have a Little Giant Automatic egg turner that fits the Little Giant incubator I borrowed from a friend. I thought it dried out too quickly. Anyone have any ideas on an incubator I could buy the this egg turner can be used in?
I saw an advertisement for 6 month old EASTER EGGER henS. I have an assortment of unvaccinated hens that all lay brown eggs and I wanted some that would lay blue ones. The owner said they were all vaccinated, so I just wanted to be sure that my current hens would be all right.
If my chickens aren't vaccinated, is it okay to introduce vaccinated chickens into my flock? I heard the virus sloughs off the vaccinated birds and infects the unvaccinated ones.
I successfully raised 2 sets of chicks in an XL dog crate. My heat lamp was only a 100 watt reptile lamp. I put a thermometer in the back and everything went fine. Since I live in California, I was able to move my chicks outside at 3 weeks to a new coop of their own.
