New Pullets this Spring - One not laying

My 6 new Red Sexlink pullets, purchased at 17 week, started laying about 3 weeks after I got them. They are consistantly giving me 5 lovely eggs a day. I seem to have one "problem child", a chicken who does not hang with the rest, does not drop when I approach, has a pale and underdeveloped...

    Today's temperature = # of eggs.

Central Ontario, Bruce Peninsula. We are in a cold snap, with lows at night -17Celcius, and highs in the day of -10C. Poor chickies are cold... 6 hens (3 RIR, 3 Delawares) gave me 5 eggs today (light morning and evening).

    Raising Geese?

@CelticOaksFarm, Thanks for the detailed reply. We, too, like your customers, gladly pay to have a premium quality, locally raised goose for Christmas dinner. Though it seems like a pile of money for one meal, when compared to other things, like our almost-weekly sushi habit, or eating...

    Raising Geese?

So, I just paid an enormous price for my Christmas goose from a local farmer. $76 (CAN) for a 12.8 lb bird. And on the way home, hubby says, "And why couldn't we talk to "(friend with acreage who also likes to roast a goose)" and see about raising our own meat birds. It's gotta be cheaper...

    Free ranging in snow?

My chickens had a hilarious response to snow last weekend. My hens (3 Delawares and 3 RIR's) have a roofed run, but we had had enough snow for hubby to pull out the snowblower. He cleared an area in front of the coop and the run for about 8 feet out from the door. Last Saturday, I was home so...

    Bullying Issue Need Help

What does "isolation" look like? Stuck in a box? Another coop? Haven't got one of those!

How do you clean your eggs?

You can't pasteurize a raw egg in the shell! That term is only used for eggs that have been cracked, combined and processed, like liquid whole eggs for food service or food production. Grocery store eggs have been graded and candled, and probably washed, but nothing more.

    Bullying Issue Need Help

I have a similar problem. I just got my first chickens 2 days ago, Three Delawares from the flock of 14 that I have been sharing care of with my neighbours, and three RIR's from another friend. The Delawares are younger, just starting to lay in the past month, where the RIR's have been laying...

Floor of my new coop - should I paint it?

Hi, all! I'm a newbie chicken farmer, currently helping to look after a small community flock that I am sharing with two neighbours. We have 14 Delaware hens, just now starting to lay, though we have been tending them since May. But I am anxious to get my own little flock, so we have built...
