I recently moved and had to give up my chickens. Looking at getting into it again and worry about the neighbors. Although, one house we looked at buying had covenants that allowed for ONE HOOFED animal. I told my wife if we bought I figured I could always threaten the chicken complainers that...
Looking into the same thing. Left my 24 foot coop behind in Florida to move into town in Missouri (need to see a shrink for that idea). But have you had any luck with the chicken tractor. I mentioned chickens to my neighbors just to get a feel for their reaction. They seem accepting but I'm a...
You could try Tri-Co Hardware & Farm Supply in Laurel Hills. If you decide to check it out there's a livestock auction the first Saturday of each month nearby in Paxton. Sometimes it's fun and I've picked up duck eggs there to hatch for my wife.
I've heard of another that will mix the grains...
Well, I guess I need to find them a home! It was a disappointing hatch, only 5 of 12 and three roos. I've still got 9 barred rocks under a hen so maybe I'll have better luck with that hatch. Thanks for your inputs!
These two are 87 days old, one has decided to sing at 0530 as of two days ago. I'm not sure which one and still holding out for a hen, fading fast! The egg supplier said they were mixed from an EE hen and Blue Laced Wyandotte rooster. Any guesses?
Other than Bielefelders, I've been lucky at looking at the wings on day one to determine male or female. Right now I have a dilemma! My current hatch was very ambiguous; two I "knew" were girls, three I hope are but...not so sure 87 days later. One began to sing at 0530 as in OHH that's too...
Has anyone had definitive luck fixing the soft shell issue? My flock is 4 BuffOrppintons, 1 each white splash Marans, Bielefelder and a Bielefelder rooster. After about 4 months I figured out which BO is my soft shell and it's gotten to the point where she laid every third day at best and then...
I have a Bielefelder Rooster that needs a good home. He's six months old and really likes girls! The problem is so does his brother and with only 6 hens they are starting to play rough.
NW Florida, Niceville. Not looking for a stew pot.
Which egg is my Bielefelders? I have two young hens, hatched 27 April 2016 and both have laid eggs. I caught Little B checking out the nesting box but when I came back there were two new small eggs. One is a nice light brown/tan and the other a light brown with speckles. My second young hen...
Thanks for the idea of holding them by the shanks. I've been pinning them to the ground but the other chickens seem to take the opportunity for cheap[ shots and I end up defending them for the minute I hold them down. I don't let the aggressiveness go beyond a single peck in an aggressive...
I'm currious if you had pics of the Marans/Orppington mix? I've got a Splash Marans (White with black spots) that is starting to mature and he's in with 4 Buff Orppington hens that are 1 year older. He's 13 weeks old and has been grabbing a Bielefelder hen but not mounting...soon.
Thanks
Marty
Do you have pictures? I hatched 3 Bielefelders Apr 26-27 2016 and got 2 roos and a poulet (kind of backwards). It was a mixed batch of eggs of 5 breeds. Anyway one roo was ginger and makes me wonder if he is a mix and if not which roo to keep for
breeding...
I had one look almost the same. HE has a faded eyeline stripe and a light to white spot on his head. The poullett had a very defined eyeliner stripe and just the dark stripe on her head. At about 3 weeks his eyeliner was completely gone and he started to grow a comb. She still has the...
Good luck with the hatch! I came upon a few Bielefelder eggs by chance when buying Marans. Of the 14 I hatched we're keeping 3 Wheaten Marans (pullets I think), and 3 Bielefelders (1 Roo and 2 Pullets), So far, at 3 weeks the Bielefelders are super mellow and the roo will even approach my big...
We just hatched 13 healthy chicks from several breeds and 36 eggs. We got 3 Marans, 3 Bielefelder, 3 Gold Laced Cochins, 1 Favorelle, and 3 Black Oprpingtons. This was my first attempt, my wife does this with her 2nd and 3rd grade classes but with less success.
As I was researching it seems...
