Maui-Peg

Aloha from Maui!

I live in Maui Meadows and have been adopted by 3 Feral Hens. Buttercup, Betty (Boop) or Black Betty and Rosie!

It all started when my friend gave me a bird feeder for my Birthday in may... We were hoping for lovebirds... But EVERYONE came! Including my sweet hens.

We have been feeding them Organic Costco feed and some from the feed store. Politely asking them for eggs every day.

I have never had hens before (keep this in mind). I was calling for them, but Betty wasn't coming and I finally found her in a corner "resting"... I thought she was dead or something! Needless to say, I scared the b-jesus out of her and she ran away screeching and screaming at me! No surprise as she was sitting on (and probably laying her eggs!)!

There they were... just like I asked for 1 Dozen perfect eggs. We didn't know what to do so we took them thinking they were used to laying them there... (not leaving any as we didn't know the drill ...) ; (. Needless to say they stopped laying them there...

They still came to the yard everyday so we were sure they were laying somewhere. Let the hunt begin! After about 10 days... we found them! This time there were 11 eggs... so we took 8 and left 4. I had to pretty much root her out of the nest (scared the heck out of her again... again I thought she was dead... or something.). She was upset for awhile, but then calmed down... ate some food and is now back on the nest. She slept there last night too... normally they all go the the trees. After reading some... I think that you call this a "Broody Hen". But we have eggs! Yay!

That brings us to today. I would love any suggestions... We would really love them to lay in Nesting boxes... but they love to lay the eggs in the leaf piles under the tree. We leave our gate open so they can come and go.

Hope you enjoy the photos and any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Happy as can be!
