can ducks stop producing oil for feathers?

I realize this is an old post but it's the very information I needed today!!! I have a rescued duck (1.5yrs old) that had never been in water. I put her in the bathtub, she had a ball but when she got out, she was cold and shivering. I had never seen this in a duck before. Thank you for the...

    Strange Behavior

No, they are usually all go to bed just after dusk. Them being out that late was very strange. However, there is a large light out in the yard, so it was not really dark.

    Strange Behavior

The strangest thing happened last night. Two chickens (hens) were sitting huddled together in the middle of the free space yard in 6" of snow, making quiet little chicken noises. When the dog barked at them, they didn't move. Usually when the dogs bark, they go to the farm side of the yard, but...

"free range"--let's get rid of this nonsense term

I'm sure my chickens fit your definition of Free Range. When I open their pen gate in the morning, they are free to roam as far out into the world as they care to go. When they are out and about I'm not totally sure where they go but they show up late afternoon in plenty of time for dinner. I...

    I can't believe

Update Be careful what you ask for!!!! The chicks are growing up beautifully cuddly and friendly. They moved out into the chicken house 2 weeks ago. They were easily accepted by my older hens. Actually since there are more of them they sort of took over the place. The problem is now I can't get...

    I can't believe

interesting idea since I wasn't planning this at all i have nothing set up. The first two nights they spent in one of my pig's crates, evicting the pigs to their dismay. This morning they have moved into my bath tub (guess I'll be showering upstairs) until I figure out a the next solution...

    I can't believe

I can't believe I drove two and a half hours each way and came home last night with this. A box of week old Blue Jersey Giants. I usually let my girls raise (adult Black Jerseys) the all the chicks I bring in. They have always done such an outstanding job, I never saw any reason to change the...

How many hours spent with your chickens?

Apparently not enough, last evening when I went to close up their house for the night a couple of my young ones acted like they didn't know who I was. Chickpea and the older girls just wanted to know what iI brought for snack. Guess I'll be doing my homework in the chicken yard in the warmer...

Neighbor's Chickens Trying to Join My Flock

You could make if a funny approach with a video of their chickens feasting at your house. And say Hey, I just want to show you how your chickens free range right down to my feeders. Some where on this site I read the amount free range chickens need, I don't remember the amount now, so don't...

Dogs that kill weasels but not chickens?

Start with an even tempered herding dog, and it works beautifully. I put my chickens up at night, sometimes I need to put them up early my gentle dogs herd them better and faster than I ever could. Most importantly be aware of the dogs temperament, I have one with a very high prey drive that...

    Backyard Pole Light

You need the ventilation all year long. I live in SW Indiana and have that same kind of rural light in my yard. My coop sits so the two smaller windows face the light and the much bigger window is on the opposite side facing the rising sun. The coop is big enough so that is is very dark...

    Ready for winter

Here's an update. 5 of the younger chickens refuse to go in the house at night since the shavings have been added. They has to be caught and put in by hand. The rest seem to like it just fine and the shavings have not been kicked off the shelves.
