Such a great city! We lived in the Aves and Sugar House while earning degrees at the U! I sincerely hope that we'll be able to have a mountain getaway in Utah someday!
I live near downtown Houston. Our city ordinance allows up to 30 chickens provided the coop is a minimum of 100' from the nearest neighboring building and the lot is a minimum of 65'x125'. Those standards effectively prohibit keeping chickens legally, as a typical city lot is 5,000 square feet.
You know, maybe I just need to suggest to the city that they create a reasonable ordinance and monetize it and issue permits! They are always looking for a money grab!
Thank you! I'm planning to get in touch with the owners of the flocks within a few blocks of us to get some insight from those doing it against the ordinance. I'm a rule follower by nature, so I really just want the legislation to pass!
Thank you for the links! I have some reading to do! From my research I think 4-6 would be about perfect. There is proposed legislation to supercede City ordinances and allow 6 chickens but that doesn't mean I shouldn't try to do something at the city level at the same time!
I can't even imagine having 30 in such a dense neighborhood! It was definitely written to effectively keep chickens out of the city. A standard lot is more like 50'x100'!
