    Newly hatched chicks

I have a silkie cockerel and a variety of hens. These chicks just arrived. The grey and the large yellow are both Buff Sussex x Silkie. The small yellow is a a pekin x silkie. What colour do you think the grey one will go? I’m surprised he’s grey (I think it’s a he) as mum is buff and dad is white.

Buff Sussex chicks - can you tell what gender?

I guess, I’ll know for sure in a week or so. But so far they look like female saddle feathers to me!

Buff Sussex chicks - can you tell what gender?

That’s brilliant advice. What are saddles? Sorry for stupid questions. This is the first time I’ve bought unsexed chicks.

Buff Sussex chicks - can you tell what gender?

Aha! So the pullets have sort of rounded feathers and the roosters are more pointy? Is that right. I think they’re definitely pullets, then!

I’m glad everyone seems to think they’re pullets. I thought the same until one grew those feathers in its tail. It could be she’s just got darker colouring. When you say you need a close up photo of the back, what are you looking for?

They are quite camera shy. These are all my photos today:

How long before broodies start laying again?

No I don’t give them extra light. Thanks for your reply, though. I think you’re spot on!

Buff Sussex chicks - can you tell what gender?

They were hatched about 10-11 weeks ago. No redness of combs yet, but one of them has grown some greeny black feathers in its tail the last few days. When they were really small they differed in size, but seem the same now. Have I got one of each? I’m hoping two girls but won’t mind a rooster.

How long before broodies start laying again?

Yes you are probably right. They seem to be moulting as well, so no chance of any blue eggs this year, I guess. I wonder if the babies will start laying at normal age (17-20 weeks) or will they wait until spring?

How long before broodies start laying again?

I have, amongst others, two Araucanas. Great little hens who laid beautiful blue eggs daily from about 17 weeks old - until they went broody. One went first, and she was stubborn.. boy, was she stubborn. I tried all the tricks in the book, but I couldn’t snap her out of it, so, with an all...

    Pekin Bantam not laying

Yes I am in the UK. She stopped laying in summer, though, and she’s only young. I read their first moult is at 18 months. She started moulting at 8 months old.

    Pekin Bantam not laying

I have a little millefeuille Pekin who is not a year old yet. Got her when she was 16 weeks last spring. She laid a few eggs, not many, but I expect that from that breed. She hasn’t laid an egg in months. She also has had a big moult, which is fine, but i didn’t realise they moulted properly at...

Separate mama from her babies or not?

I currently have two foster mamas. I don’t (yet) have a cockerel and when they went broody, I found them impossible to “break” - so I went and bought them newly hatched baby chicks. Both mamas are Araucanas. Great layers - until they go broody. Then theyre just hopeless. Anyway, Mama 1 is doing...
