Can chickens stand the cold weather?

Thanks all of you for your input. I am going to make sure the wind issue is taken care of, (blanket or tarp) and keep the light on just under their sleeping area. The cold has definitely slowed their egg production. We've been -3 at night to highs of 6 and 7 in the day. Supposed to be...

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

There is a cover. We have a roof on the pen and the run is covered by chain link. They are protected from outside critters and they have a place to go to get out of the cold and wind. They just seem to prefer roosting outside right now. We are supposed to get down to 0 degrees for 3 days...

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

Probably right. I guess if they get too cold they will find their way inside where it's warmer.

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

Thanks Den in pen. The heat source is outside the coop and the girls are protected from predators. They just seem to prefer the peak on the roof over their perch inside? [/IMG][/IMG]

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

I've got a few Russian Orloff's and a lone Leghorn. I'm in Colorado and the weather has been getting down to around 15 degrees at night. The girls seem to like to roost on top of my coop instead of inside. I have a heat lamp in the pen. I'm new at raising chickens and would hate for them to...

For the new folks that haven't experienced a molt yet.

Thanks for the pictures. I haven't experienced molting yet. Now I know what to expect.

    Russian Orloffs

I too have Orloff's. I only have 3 but one of them has the "cross-beak" as you worded it. I love their demeanor, very docile but full of personality. I look forward to interacting with them every day. This is my first attempt to raise chickens in town and so far i am loving it. Thanks for...

    Russian Orloffs

Thanks Gresh, the brown eggs are my first two Orloff. The rest are the Leghorn's. These girls are starting to produce. The Kokanee is a freebie, another passion of mine

    Russian Orloffs

I have to update my post on the "eggless orloff's" after six months. We got home last night to a little excess noise and one of our "girls" first egg. We felt like celebrating? I think we are weird.

Mine are 28 weeks old and still not laying. I have heard light beige also. Can't wait till they start producing.

Kenai Peninsula? Where are you at? We know Homer, Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Nicholaivesk. We absolutely love it there. Thanks for the reply.

    Russian Orloffs

Our first attempt at raising backyard chickens. Believe we have a leghorn and 3 Russian Orloffs. We love the spangled pattern, we love this breed. Of course we are excited newbies. We have one Rooster and would love to breed them but, city ordinance says no roosters May have to get rid of...

    Appenzeller Hobenfitzer

Pic's of the girls. Don't know the breed but I sure am enjoying them. Afraid one of my "girls" is a Roo after all. City ordinance says no Roosters in town. I guess I'm going to have to part with him.
