I have a Barred Rock who is in her second round of a mystery funk. She has been having problems laying for the past six months. Sometimes she will lay just the white/yolk, sometimes she'll lay a soft shelled egg, sometimes she sits in the box for hours and only poops, and sometimes she just...
I would think she should be able to jump up on a roost that is 2 ft off the ground. If she is new to the coop, she may not be used to it. Try putting her up on the roost. I clipped my Sussex because she was flying over a 5 ft fence. She can still jump 2.5 to 3 ft off the ground.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll add the light at the end of the day and hope that the pullets learn their lesson is they get caught off the roost.
I've thought about adding the light in the a.m. but I "HAVE" to keep them quiet in the mornings - for two reasons.
1st - the lead hen fights with the babies. Actually she beats them up.
2nd - I can't let them out of the coop until 7:00 a.m. I could really but I live in a subdivision and...
I have 3 pullets, 20 weeks old as of yesterday and 3 hens. Only one pullet has started to lay. I know that chickens slow down their laying when it starts getting darker earlier. So, I'm somewhat concerned that with it getting darker earlier that my non-laying pullets won't make it to full...
Sometimes it takes a day or two for them to lay another egg after their first. My little speckled sussex just started laying on 9/1 and I've gotten six eggs from her as of last night, and they were about golf ball size. So, I'd say the chicken you're talking about just isn't up to full...
Black Australorp - 22 weeks
Buff Orpington - 20 weeks (since deceased)
Buff Orpington - 24 weeks (since deceased)
Barred Rocks (2) - I have no idea because the were already laying when I got them.
Speckled Sussex - 19 weeks
Delaware - any day now, squatted for me over the weekend.

I have a black australorp. She's a great chicken however, she's a little bossy as she's the lead hen now. I like their personalities though. Very smart. You can see the wheels turning as they're looking at you. Mine knows her name and comes when called. LOL! I have a friend that loves her...
I dunked my lead hen and then next hen in the pecking order. They are so busy preening themselves, they haven't had time to go after the pullets. My third hen is looking at me like she wanted to be dunked too. Poor thing. The lead hen was humiliated which is exactly what I wanted. And a lot...
I think your plan sounds like it will work just fine. Especially since your older group free ranges all day. I would worry more if they didn't free range.
I can't eat eggs either - white or yolk. Allergic to them and had no idea til I did a blood test a couple years ago. People think it's funny that I raise chickens for eggs I can't eat.
