    Today's temperature = # of eggs.

High temp today was 13 but very windy all day. Out of 18 hens we had 10 eggs. Our best day in a long time. Go figure. First night we left the light on all night to give them a little warmth in the hen house. I give them a warm oatmeal/cornmeal mash twice a day when the weather is this cold...

    Odd Egg

Thank you for your prompt response. I thought it was very odd. We only had these hens for two days so I figured it had something to do with the raccoon attack at it's prior home. (In truth, I thought my husband was pulling a prank until I realised it was a real egg.) Poor hen. ME

    Odd Egg

Has anyone ever had a egg with a pattern on it? This is a new chicken to our flock but her previous owner said they had had a run in with a raccoon three nights prior to her laying this egg. This pattern does not exist in any of our nest boxes. It is on both sides of the egg but more pronounced...

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

So sorry not to have replied sooner. Trouble with kids and car. Sorry to hear tht you lost the two sick birds. :( We are in Northwood. Ella is fine now, she perked up late on Thursday and by Friday was back to her old self. She hasn't resumed laying however. Our Americauna also stopped, perhaps...

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

I hope your sick girls are doing better. After reading your post and that of DraigAthar I became concerned about our girls developing this illness. This morning I woke at 4:15 to check on the flock and all but the black Austraulorp greeted me. She did not leave her perch until 8:am which is very...

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

After purchasing our first 4 hens NPIP tested we chose not to add non tested birds to our flock for just that reason. As you state, tested birds are healthy birds and we didn't and won't take the chance on non tested birds. We love our girls and boy, and want them to stay healthy just like all...

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

We are very happy with our/your hens! They get cherry tomatoes, worms, slugs, bread and gingerbread crumbs, layer pellets, grass and scratching in the chicken tractor. They really like the plantain that we are trying to encourage to replace the wire grass that is taking over our yard. I will...

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

Now that you mention it the hens that we bought were NPIP tested. That for me was a selling point. Also we did not want to end up with more than one rooster and by purchasing the hens already laying we knew we were not getting surprize roosters. This was our aim. I am not saying that the venders...

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

We went to the swap in Derry two wekends ago. I suggest that you get there early. We arrived at 9:15, there was only one vender with chickens (4) that were already laying all the other venders had chicks to about 14 weeks. We bought the 4 hens that were already laying and there was high demand...

Great article. I too really enjoyed the re-purposed play house and dryer. We built our chicken tracter from used scrap lumber and tubing but we purchased the chicken wire. Thanks for sharing.
