I guess my biggest concern is how soon we can get chickens in there again. We will clean it out and air it out. We were just getting in to the swing of things. The kids showed the chickens at the fair and then we started getting eggs. We were all enjoying them so much! I am sick to my...
I purchased the first one 6 months ago...when we first got chicks. So, they have been using it for a while. We hadn't ever put it in the coop until the temps were close to 0 this week though. I can't remember if they were the same and already tossed the old one. They looked the same though.
I guess we can never be certain. But, the death of rooster and the rest of the flock were on separate nights and both nights, they were locked in the coop. We have the Large OverEZ coop, so it's pretty secure. I did have someone tell me that skunks could come in and drink the blood and leave...
Found the package...it's splatterproof, not shatterproof. Says "Hardened Pyrex R glass designed not to shatter if contacted by liquids" It's by Orscheln.
It was just the rooster on night one...the other 9 on night 2. Maybe the cord on night one and the lamp on night two? Just having the lamp on is toxic?
I don't have the packaging, but I can check the packaging at the store tomorrow. They were under the light in the coop for several nights just fine. Maybe the burning caused the problem?
Thanks for your ideas! I was thinking it might have to do with toxins from the charred floor of the coop, but the light was shatterproof and did show signs of burning on the outside. The weird thing is that the doors were open all day the day after the rooster died, so it should have been...
On Saturday morning, when we opened the coop up to let our chickens run, we found our rooster dead. The heat lamp had fallen in the night and burned a little bit of bedding and it's cord, we figured maybe it had hit him in the head or something funky had happened with him and the light. We got...
