It's a protein powder that is added to their water - my husband usually does the addition of that, so unfortunately I'm not sure - but he followed the directions on the container....
I suppose I should have a little bit lower expectations for the silkie hens as I know they aren't known for...
It's a variety - we have silkies, polish, rhode island red, ameraucana, welsummer...
I we get a blue/green one pretty regularly, white, and brown. So, I know that at least one of each breed is laying, but it seems there should be more.... The silkies I expect to lay fewer though.
Hi all,
We have 15 hens, and we've been receiving 2-3 eggs per day. This has gone on for a month or so now... 7 of our hens are relatively young still (hatched in Sept. 2017), while 8 of them are 1 1/2 - 2 years old.
They have a comfortable coop, safe run, regular water changes, protein...
Hi there,
In the state of Maine, I have heard that you have to purchase 6 chicks at a time (when you have none).
Is this also the case if you already have chickens at home? We have 17 already - do we have to buy 6 more at a time or can we buy 2 or 3 (like at Tractor Supply for Chick Days)...
Thank you for your reply - the 5 larger ones are from one of the big online hatcheries... we got them second hand. Your response could serve as explanation as to their size in comparison to the other 4. I favor the smaller fluffier ones personally. Thanks for the insight!

Can non-bearded silkies appear to be less puffy that bearded? I have 4 bearded, and 5 non-bearded and the non-bearded ones are just slightly smoother looking and don't have as big of a poof on their heads...
Any thoughts are appreciated!
How much does weather effect the egg laying? Our chickens are just about 20 weeks, but it has been negative temps and snowing constantly.... I hear that can slow the production.... Any thoughts?
Hi there,
I was wondering how many types of silkie chickens there are..... ? I know there can be standard silkies and bantam silkies (although bantam is most common), and I know there can be many variations of colors of silkies.
However, what is causing me to ask the question is that we have...
Hi,
The 9 others are predominantly silkies as well, with a couple others mixed in. We have one confirmed rooster (a younger one), who is very proud of himself. He lets us know often. One other potential silkie roo (one of our younger ones), but we're beginning to doubt it.
The coop was a...
