Hens poop where they sleep! Adds germs to the eggs. no sleeping in the nesting boxes. We cover them up at night when someone is broody, and open them during the day.
ooh, thank you. We cover the nesting boxes when one of the hens gets broody, and have been doing the same when the teen girls started sleeping in them.
We have Seven 11 month old hens and 4 teens about 14 weeks old. 2 bars, one higher that the hens sleep on, one lower to the ground. probably 6 ft long (times 2)
They did sleep in the nesting boxes for 2 nights. but they poop where they sleep. On the plus side, it would be warmer. We don't allow the hens sleep in the nesting boxes.

We have 8 laying hens about 7 months old. Our hens usually lay 6-8 eggs daily..but yesterday there were only 3. Could it be the heat? poop and eating seems normal. I've been cooling off their water every couple of hours.
