Our girls took a long time recovering from molting .. then Winter arrived .. No eggs at all. Then I remembered something from my childhood. My dad would hang a light bulb in the HenHouse. So, I decided to see if this trick would work. AND Just a plain light bulb has worked wonders in...
If you want a hen to hatch your fertile eggs I suggest you purchase a couple of Bantam hens who get broody at the sight of two eggs in a nest ! Allow the little mothers to take on the care of the chicks. My dad used to put duck-eggs under Bantams ... the only downside of hens raising ducks...
You did the right thing .. I remember as a kid (we had 3 pens of 4 different type chickens) my dad had a pen full of some fancy show chickens with the most beautiful looking rooster .. Mom and I hated that rooster ! He was so SO mean ! So we ate him. End of story for that bird. ! ...

Do you have a neighbor that can do 'the deed' for you ?? I've experienced the same tuning on several occasions and a good neighbor always comes to my rescue.
I tried 'ace-ing' a rooster to death and succeeded ... gave enough ace to put a 1500# horse to sleep ! ! Not an enjoyable event...
Oh so much great most welcome information in regards to 'compatible breeds' ... my worries are less now. GrandDaughter and I are wanting a 'mixed' flock of hens, not sure we are ready for a rooster, , , we are wanting family, ranch, dog, cat compatible chickens too. We would appreciate...
