Normal hen behavior while hatching eggs?

Thanks. I do have the broodies sectioned off but it's not secure. I'll see if I can find something better. I was hoping that they would just raise their chicks in the flock, like last time, because integration is easier. But maybe that's not to be this time...

Normal hen behavior while hatching eggs?

Hi! I have a flock of 4 hens (no rooster)--the original 3 (the boss and 2 that are now broody and sitting on fertile eggs I got from a friend) and 1 (Cookie) added by hatching from a broody 2 years ago. The boss has never shown any interest in going broody, broody hens, or chicks. The two...

    Ants in nesting box

I am so glad to see that I'm not the only one her brings her brooding hens room service. Thanks for this post...I just had to move the peeping eggs and the mommas (apparently these two are going to co-parent) and was looking for reassurance that they would finish their "job" in the new site.

Does a broody hen go into lockdown?

This is so helpful! I have two hens plastered beside each other and sitting on 9 eggs (the number under each hen changes from day to day!). I expect hatching to occur Friday or Saturday. One hen gets off the nest an hour or so a day, but I hadn't seen the other one off in about 3 days...I was...

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

Curious...what did you put in the water? I have to admit that cutting and blood have never been my "thing"...although my hen is almost walking normally today. And the bumblefoot surgery I did last year healed well and looks great....

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

Update to all who've held my hand through this :) Things did not work quite as I expected. By the time I removed the vet wrap on Friday evening, the Prids had already moved the yellow area of pus (lump on the right in the original photo) to the top and we did the surgery to remove it. The lump...

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

Thanks...I think. Just when I think I have the hang of things (like bumblefoot on the bottom of the foot) I get a curveball....

    Chicken Medicine Chest

In my medicine chest I have Vetericyn, hydrocolloid bandages (I cut them up to fit the wound, so although expensive they last a long time), Neosporin, vet wrap (aka "breathable, gentle wrap--sticks to itself, not fur or feathers"; I buy the 4" roll and cut it into whatever shapes I need), Prids...

    All roos I'm afraid.....

I hope you get your hens!! When one of my hens went broody last year, she sat on 4 eggs...and I ended up with 3 roos and 1 hen. This time Mama is sitting on 9 eggs...hopefully I'll get at least 3 hens!

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

Thanks!, everyone, for your responses and tips. After treatment on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with an Epsom salt bath, gentle debriding with a moderately rough gauze pad, then Vetericyn and (when dry) a smear of Prids, she ("Bumpy") was moving better this morning--limping instead of hopping...

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

I'll be in the coop bright and early with the neosporin and Prids...when they are contained in the coop is the only time this old gal can catch them :)

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

Thanks--I hadn't thought of yogurt...I'm assuming plain. Do I mix it in with water? Or can I break a probiotics capsule into their feed? I was wondering about mixing neosporin with the Prids. Her legs look fine, thank goodness.

    Bumblefoot on TOP of foot...Prids?

Hi! I've been treating a limping hen for bumblefoot on the bottom of her foot...got a core about the size of a pea and it's healing nicely. However, she is still limping and over the past few days I've noticed two lumps on the top of her foot. I'm bandaging the bottom of her foot while *that*...

    Bumblefoot Removed

Congrats on your success! I'm dealing with bumblefoot on 3 of our hens. When you used the Prid, did you wrap it? Once a day for 4 days? Did you debride the scab first? Soak in water with Epsom salts? Would love to know how you got the great results. Thanks.
