    Raccoon coming at dusk

Yeah that’s the other option. I can’t decide if a quick death is better than a possible slow death, but then again, it also has a chance of surviving.

    Raccoon coming at dusk

Yeah, the hot wire sounds like the best long-term solution. However, I’ve had chickens for 5-6 years and the only time I’ve had a problem with raccoons is before I had a automatic door and forgot the close up the coop. I chased two raccoons away and never had another problem. My coop is pretty...

    Raccoon coming at dusk

I have a young raccoon that’s been coming around the past several nights. He came in the middle of the night the first time and got in the coop because my daughter accidentally blocked the automatic door with the ramp after it fell down. Fortunately, i woke up to the sound of distressed chickens...

    Verifying this is a roo

I’m pretty sure this is a Roo. He is just 7 weeks old so I wanted to make sure he is a Roo before I rehome him. He is a Mosaic.

    Separating two broody hens

Maybe, I’ll try to break the broody that is going through her second batch of eggs right now. She let the other one die anyway. I feel bad that she has basically sat on eggs for 6 weeks now though and won’t end up with any chicks! But, I’m thinking ending up with one mom is less risky than...

    Separating two broody hens

There’s two hens on four eggs (there were six). Is it risky to break the other one if the eggs are hatching tomorrow? I do like the idea though. Having two mother hens with a small number of chicks may be complicated. Neither one is very assertive with the other hens so I was hoping they would...

    Separating two broody hens

I have two broody hens that are sitting on just 3 eggs each. They are due to hatch tomorrow. The first broody hen just hatched one chick about a month ago but I found it dead in the coop when it was just a couple days old. I assume one of the other hens killed it because the mom is not very high...

Help - viable late egg, opened up prematurely

The eggs were all set under the hen at the same time. I don’t have a rooster. They were mail order eggs, so I always assume there will be several that don’t hatch.

Help - viable late egg, opened up prematurely

Yes, I just got back into town and wish I was still gone for a few more days. 😏 What if the chick tries to pip where the tape is?

Help - viable late egg, opened up prematurely

I have a broody hen who is hatching eggs. One was non-viable (actually exploded yesterday), one had a tiny peck in the egg for a few days, and a healthy chick hatched two days ago. I thought the remaining egg (with the tiny peck in it, looked more like the peck was from the outside, not a pip)...

Olive Egger and True Blue Whiting - Roo or Pullet?

😭 Don’t care about the Whiting, but the Oliver Egger was my daughter’s favorite. I guess “Harriet” is now “Harry” and will find a new home.

Olive Egger and True Blue Whiting - Roo or Pullet?

Ok, I’ve asked about these two before. Now they’re a little older. The more gray Olive Egger and the true blue whiting (shades of brown/red). They are 11 weeks old.
