I have several black australorps (and blue), and I would say look at the comb and wattles. Females get very little, and the roos get quite large. The roos are a lot larger as well.
I used spiral-type leg bands to identify some of my hens. Had one work its way up the hens leg and cut into the bone. She never used the leg again and had to be put down. Any other ideas or tips to prevent this? MickeyLee
Anyone have any ideas how to set up a simple pen for my purebred Australorps to hatch and raise their own chicks? Can you put newly hatched chicks under a very broody hen and fool her into thinking that she hatched them?
I started 2 yrs. ago with hatchery chicks , wanted all RI Reds, but got half sussex cross. Added ISA brown pullets last spring, and then added 7 Australorp pullets and 3 cockerels last August. Now I have 30 laying hens. Didn't realize how broody the Australorps are. Started laying 2 months ago...
