We have a cross beaked hen who's a year old. We've never done anything special for her, she lives and eats with the other chickens without a problem. She has foot deformaties as well, and we considered culling her early on but decided to wait and see. I'd never breed her, and she looks goofy...
I'm a real beginner, but my only experience so far went the other way. I have a silkie chick who's about 7 weeks old now. She's missing the outer toes on both feet, had two curled toes and one leg that lagged behind her. I used tape to straighten the crooked toes and a pipe cleaner hobble to...
Thought I'd post an update.
I found that the tape didn't work so well on such fluffy legs! I switched to using a pipe cleaner hobble and it really seemed to help. After a couple of days I removed it, and she seems to be doing just fine. She's about 6 weeks old now and so far she's keeping up...
I live along the gulf coast and temps usually reach 100+ at least a few days every summer. I've got 8 silkies that are going to be moving outside in a couple of weeks & need input on how to modify a coop design so they survive the summer. The very idea of a wooden box with a metal roof sound...
I had one egg that hadn't pipped that I opened, she's doing fine now.
It was the first egg of my last group to start cheeping. The next day all the others had pipped and most had zipped and a couple had hatched I noticed that one egg still hadn't pipped. I tapped and listened and it was still...
Hi all,
I was watching a program on microloans and decided to look into it (giving not getting). I went to www.kiva.org and decided to sign up. You can search for places, people or purposes you're particularly interested in and loan them $25. These are mostly women in 3rd world countries...
I have a small yard in a big city, so we're probably only keeping 4 chickens anyway. They're pets who will hopefully give us a few eggs once in awhile, not breeding stock. If she gets to the point where she can't walk or seems miserable, we'll put her down. Until then we'll just wait and see...
I thought her toes were curled under, but it turns out they're just... odd.
The fifth toes are really long, almost the size of the other toes. The outer toes of each foot are just tiny stubs. She's noticably clumsier than the other chicks, but manages to get around. She also seems to be...
